Wouldn't these emergency crews already be employed on the ship and on the clock? What is the extra cost here? It's not like they were on the open water and had to deploy boats or something using gas, it was docked and he could swim to shore

I'm not a legal expert, so I don't know. But this would be a civil case filed by the cruise line against the individual. Not a criminal one, so it doesn't really matter what the criminal implications are. You don't have to commit a crime in order to be sued.

The news media plasters the cruise ship and line’s name all over the place for days. Each time there is damage to the company’s image. The company has a right to protect that image. Stories like this are damaging monetarily,

If I remember correctly, the ships actually have devices that detect man overboard situations automatically, so I am sure when he fell the ship went into emergency response mode.

I understand that. Some said they were seeking legal action against him. I ask how that works considering they weren't in the US or any of it's territory. I wasn't implying that he can't be sued because it didn't happen in the US. I was asking whether the legal action taken against him has to be done in the country the alleged action took place, or the country of origin of both parties. It was a simple law question about jurisdiction.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is some small print you agree to when you purchase tickets and/or board the ship that allows the cruise company to sue.

I don’t blame the cruise line for taking a hard stance on this. It would be very disruptive and dangerous if it became a fad.

I see what you're saying. When the article said the cruise line was pursuing legal action, it sounds like they mean civilly, not criminally.

If it is civil charges now then they can file them in the US(if my understanding of the law is correct). Still would be a silly case. What damages could they really be seeking? I don't think the article title "Idiot guy jumps 100ft off Cruise ship to "send it"" is going to have a profound impact on their reputation.
