Crowd size for Brittney Griner's WNBA return baffles coach: 'How was it not a sellout?'

The Phoenix Mercury were on the road to start the 2023 WNBA season as the team took on the Los Angeles Sparks at the Crypto.com Arena in Brittney Griner’s official return to the floor.
Griner had 18 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two assists in Phoenix’s 94-71 loss. But it was a big moment for the former Baylor standout as she returned to the court for the first time since 2021. She missed all of last season as she was jailed in Russia on a drug conviction. She returned to the U.S. in December as part of a prisoner swap for arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Because it was her return, Mercury head coach Vanessa Nygaard was expecting a much fuller arena.
"I mean, it was great. But like honestly, c’mon now LA. We didn’t sell out the arena for BG?" Nygaard said. "Like, I expected more, you know, to be honest. Right, it was great, it was loud. But how was it not a sellout? How was it not a sellout?"

The arena could fit about 19,068 and about 10,396 people came to the game, according to ESPN. The Sparks’ average attendance is more than 5,600. The team finished 13-23 last season and haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2020 coronavirus-impacted season.

Real question. Has any WNBA game ever been a sellout?

Gosh, it wasn't a sell out because not enough people bought tickets. Why didn't they buy tickets? Because they didn't care to see her or your whole team, for that matter.
Maybe you were overdue a reality check.

I’m surprised that many showed up seeing as Griner was very vocally hating America until she was locked away and the US saved her arse after she blatantly broke the law

Not an ounce of testosterone to be found in that photo...no matter how much they wish that they could be men.

Because NO ONE CARES ABOUT PROFESSIONAL WOMENS BASKETBALL
and because duck Brittney Griner. Should have left her in Russia

It would have been had the girl not been actually guilty of Russian crimes and not been traded for a terrorist while acting like America was racist for not trying hard enough.
Plus she was making more money over there..poor bitch..
I'd have chosen Barabbas over her.

I'd be willing to bet even that number was tickets sold and not actual attendance and included some giveaways and the like.

Sums up how I feel about it to a tee.
Exchanging that international arms dealer to go free for that POS was plain stupid and will come back to bite us on the arse sooner or later. Mark my words.

Remember when the women wanted to require the men’s season ticket holders to also purchase women’s season tickets?

The truth is, women are 50% of the population, if they actually supported women’s sports then those events would be just as big and profitable as the men’s.

I’m not a biologist, but women naturally have testosterone and men naturally have estrogen.

Because if I wanted to watch people who could only jump 6 inches in the air or fire off 2 handed set shots I’d go watch an elementary school boys game for free

Oh, it's because your sport isn't very popular

It is still women's basketball. There would have been a bigger crowd if this guy showed up:

She should be cutting backflips for that amount.
