My son runs cross country.. Trains in the summer, occasionally runs meets on Saturdays in the fall.. He plays football, basketball and baseball as well.. The cross country has raised his endurance and made him faster. He starts in football, basketball and baseball as well.. I'm glad he's doing it as running is something I wish I would've leant ex to enjoy as a kid to help me carry it forward as an adult..

A good number of wrestlers do it (in lower weight classes)

how many CC runners do you know that could play oline?
Yeah, getting in the way of people for 15 seconds at a time is the same as running 20 miles through the woods.

This thread is about cross country, not the other events in track such as sprinting and jumping.
With that said, the best in cross country are talented athletes. And damn do they work hard. SPS kids run about 6 miles a day (if I remember correctly what someone told me). The best in the state Eric Coston would excel at the sprints too if he wanted. Kid is incredible. The second best in the state is the most hard nosed basketball player I have ever seen. He is just too small, so is running instead.

Average play in football is about 4 seconds. There is a lot more to it than just "getting in the way." If that is all you are doing than you are getting dominated every down and probably riding the pine. Quickness, explosiveness, agility, leverage, balance, and strength factor into every play.
But back to the OP. XC runners are very good athletes. Stamina, endurance, agility, ability to decelerate/accelerate on uneven terrain, etc.. I never could have done it because I wasn't built to run. I was good athlete in stop/start sports like baseball and football. Not fat either. My body just doesn't do endurance very well.

Running is probably the best sport to make money as well. The odds are slim you're going to make it into the NFL/NBA/MLB, but being decent at running can win you prize money, shoes, gift certificates, etc. from road races.

I ran cross country for the sole intention of getting in shape for basketball. Of course I didn't take it very serious during the meets but I was upfront with the coach about it.

I got the impression he was referring to the noble sport of "team man hunting"

I've run a marathon. One of the most physically challenging things I've ever experienced. What about you, OP?

Any of you know a superior athlete who ran cross country over another regular sport (or as a supplement to another sport maybe)..?

You mean lacrosse. Kids don't just show up in high school and decide to play soccer. They do in lacrosse.

No, I meant soccer. More activity than sport.

Every kid that I know that is real good at soccer was good at another sport too but whatever.

Name an athlete that can't run through the woods...shite I was doing that at 5 yrs old. Unless you are handicapped you can run.
