Good afternoon OT, I need some help getting some money back.

My father uses Regions bank. A few weeks ago on a Monday, he notices fraudulent activity on his debit card since Friday. Charges were things like $500 at Walkons, 1,000 at a night club, and then some microtransactions at random car washes, McDonald’s, etc all over the city. All in all about $2,000. He tries contacting Regions by phone for 5 days while he is on a business trip to no avail. Can not get a hold of anyone. Their hotlines all go to the same broken number. He finally has to file a complaint IN PERSON to get someone to look into this. Two weeks later, they deny the claim, saying this all checks out.

What are options going forward to get the money back? We will be closing all accounts with them and taking our money elsewhere no matter the outcome after this shitshow. TIA

Debit cards offer no protection.

Same as him dropping cash at all those locations.

Is the debit card not associated with Visa or MasterCard?

Make a police report
Go to BBB if Regions cannot tell him how this all checks out.
Profit, literally.

1) Lawyer up.

2) Call a local TV station.

The debit card is a Visa. Should we file a claim with them? I had my Chase debit card compromised about two years ago and got everything back. I don’t understand why this is so difficult with them.

Generally Visa and MC branded debit cards have the same or similar fraud protections as the credit cards.

Probably just an initial denial as standard practice.

Escalate the claim and it will probably be approved.

Honestly, I have trouble believing regions denied the claim unless you are leaving out some key information.

That's weird.

Banks are typically very helpful with card fraud, even debit card fraud.

I would:
Contact the vendors and dispute the charges with them.
File a police report and show the bank.

This sounds...fishy.

There is a number on the back of the card you should have called.

Since it is a debit card, your transactions may be covered under federal Regulation E. The denial letter should give you a denial reason - the bank is required to complete an investigation and let you know the results. You are entitled to a copy of the documents they relied on to complete the investigation. You should speak to someone in the Card Servicing/Disputes department to get a clear explanation for the denial. They need to have video proof or evidence that the chip was read - something concrete - to deny.

$500 at Walk-Ons is quite the tab.
