re: Who all has dealt with elder parent care? I figure a lot of people here now
Posted by Heyjude on 3/28/26 at 8:55 am to notiger1997
Very similar experience with my parents. Dad passed two years ago, but now dealing with Mom. Open heart surgery that went sideways - couple of strokes and seizures. Long stint in rehab then tried at home alone. She is a pill abuser, so taking too much of certain pills, combined with anti-seizure meds, leads to delirium (temporary dementia). Back to the hospital for that and a fall that resulted in a broken hip. Another stint in skilled nursing - this time in a nursing home. She ranted and raved - calling my sister and I a dozen times of day each. Finally had enough and brought her back to her house. Now the medicine is all locked up and dispensed through a timed dispenser. She is better now that the meds are straight, but we still have to manage just about everything. Finances, shopping, assistance with any little thing that confuses her. Trying to move her closer because even 30 minutes is a pain when it is every little thing.
The lesson I’ve learned - save a lot of money. If you need assisted living, you’ll need at least $6k a month for a decent place. Don’t force your kids to have to make these tough decisions about your care.

Black mold is awful to deal with. It pits the plaster and it will come back. Brush as much as possible and keep your chlorine high. We even took a pressure washer to ours. We eventually moved so no clue how the new owners are dealing with it.
My son and I have the same birthday. He was the greatest birthday gift I ever received and it has been wonderful celebrating together all these years. My sister and her son also share the same birthday.
A realtor called us and my husband did think it was a scam at first. But we were already planning to sell, so we listened and got the deal done. It worked out great for everyone. You won’t know unless you try.
Many credit unions have great student credit card pro grams. Some with 0% interest. Shop around and I’m sure you’ll find a good one. Getting a credit card at a young age, and keeping it open, is one of the best ways to help your credit score. Longevity matters with credit trade lines.
re: Deciding between longevity/reliability and budget comfort with a used vehicle

Financing for 72 months might be the best option. Stretch the term longer to get a good, reliable vehicle which will hold it’s value over time. If you don’t belong to a credit union, join one. They will have good rates on vehicles especially in the longer term categories.
Spouse was 29 when diagnosed. Pretty large tumor and ended up at MD Anderson for a 3rd surgery to remove lymph nodes and parathyroid glands after getting only the thyroid removed during previous surgeries. 10 years later and is completely healthy, but has to take Synthroid and Calcium replacement pills every day. You will be fine. Get a good surgeon - one who has done plenty of Thyroid removals.

Sherman, was that price with the land? And was it turnkey or custom with a builder?
re: Residential Lot Loan Rates

We recently purchased a lot and financed with EFCU Financial (the credit union). For the best credit, they had a 100% LTV, 10 year balloon product (20 year amortization) at 5% APR. other options available depending on credit, but that was one of the best products I found. It was earlier this year - before the Fed rate increases. So the rate might be higher now…

I know you have gotten the same advice over and over in this thread and I will say the same: get out as soon as you can. He will never change - he is incapable of it.
My story is a little different. My mother is the narcissist. She is also a prescription drug addict. I’ve had to end all contact with her and my father and I am finally coming through the other side. There are tons of resources out there and FB has some groups specifically for this issue. Good luck!

Like anything, there are pros and cons. For us the biggest determining factor was that we spend a lot of time at home, so we have a lot of time to use the pool. It doesn’t ever feel like a chore to take care of something we don’t use.
I do what I can.
re: Credit card fraud - options?

Since it is a debit card, your transactions may be covered under federal Regulation E. The denial letter should give you a denial reason - the bank is required to complete an investigation and let you know the results. You are entitled to a copy of the documents they relied on to complete the investigation. You should speak to someone in the Card Servicing/Disputes department to get a clear explanation for the denial. They need to have video proof or evidence that the chip was read - something concrete - to deny.
