Since the bill seems to be off by a factor of ten, I would have to suspect some kind of meter reading or billing error. someone is either reading the wrong gauges on the meter or shifting the decimal on the accounting side of things.

just call the water company, they should be able to figure that out pretty easily.

Had this happen to us. Meter reader was reading it upside down. Instead of three leading zeroes, he read them as trailing zeroes....

Hopefully it isn’t New Orleans. I just got a $6500 water bill. Now I get to go deal with the sewerage and water board.

I hardly know anything about this lady other than how proud she is of her "brand new 420K house", because she posts the price and that it's brand new constantly.

420K really isn't worth bragging about, btw

It's not a leak. Wither someone used your outdoor faucets to steal water....maybe fill their pool or you have a bad meter.
Leaks would show as you can turn all things off and see if the meter is still running...if so, leaks persist. But no small leak will show 80k gal of water.

Forget the missing 80,000 gallons of water. When are you going to make an honest man out of this poor guy?

Based on this thread, the boyfriend probably isn’t offering

Liz,
So what's the verdict? Your irrigation guy was going to come out last Thursday or Friday. Did they find anything? Did the city/water service come test their meter?

I am the girlfriend. I do laundry like twice a month (way too many clothes) and I don't pee nearly as often as I should. We are talking a 72K gallon increase, that isn't toilet flushing.

Still doesn't answer:

I wouldn't blame you if you just decided to pay the bill in order to not deal with the S&WB.

We had the same issue a while back. All we had to do was get a water wrench and everything was fine

Do I have to use the left handed water wrench if I am on the left hand side of the street? My neighbor had a righted handed one he will let me use but he lives across the street.

I don't think the guy came out, but I think the irrigation system has a leak when turned on. Since I turned it off from watering the yard, the meter is running as I would expect it to. Won't water the yard until I get an answer, but at least I can avoid 80,000 gallon usage next month!

Leaking irrigation is kind of the only thing that makes good sense. You might still get some financial relief from the city. It's assumed a large portion of your water consumption ends up at the treatment plant. Leaking irrigation doesn't. Maybe they'll give you a break. At least it looks like you've got the bleeding stopped.

There might be faulty meters that make it out of the factory, but I bet it's rare, and they're designed to last a whole lot longer than 6 months.
