Brand new home in SWFL, builder lives two doors down. Usual water bill is $50/8,000 gallon usage. Irma was a direct hit with a month of flooding, but that was in September. Last bill was 80,300 gallons, $500 bill. No pool, although that could fill 8 pools. Sprinkler system is turned off, no toilets running. We have the sprinkler guy coming tomorrow to look for leaks. Yard isn't wet, no sinking. Any ideas what could generate 80K gallons of water usage? Bad meter? I checked the meter and the numbers tie to the bill, so what could be causing the increase? Two people in the house, minimal water usage. Do you first contact the water company, hire a plumber? Thanks for any help.

Does your wife pee a lot? Some women have very small bladders.

"If it's yellow let it mellow; if it's brown flush it down."

Every little bit helps.

I read the meter in my yard, it has gone up 30K/gallons since the last bill (which matches the meter reading). They read it right. But something is wrong.

I can't imagine what could be leaking that would be enough to fill 8 pools! This has to be a faulty meter and I would absolutely not pay it. Have you talked to your neighbors to see if they have noticed anything? That much water can not be leaking without it going somewhere and being noticed.

Is it possible the meter was read incorrectly at first and now they are reading it correctly and that accounts for the major jump? I would ask for copies of every bill and meter reading since you have lived there, if you don't have them already.

Call the water company. They can do an audit and send out their people to investigate. They will know that that's not a reasonable or customary level of usage.

Remember doing all those handstands and cartwheels at the Chimes?

Good times.

That's simply a typo.
Tell the water company to fix it, because you've already emailed a copy to the public service commissioner.

Oh and go ahead send that email...

I got hit like that in north Georgia when my town switched to the new digital/wireless meters, as did my neighbors.

Bill increased from about $45/month to $350 for the one month, and they wouldn’t listen to arguments. Just paid it eventually.

Calling BS, they’ve been out of general circulation since 1933.

Probably a leak on your side but it could be (highly unlikely, but...) a defective meter.

I am the girlfriend. I do laundry like twice a month (way too many clothes) and I don't pee nearly as often as I should. We are talking a 72K gallon increase, that isn't toilet flushing.

Do you rinse your ice? I’ve noticed a tick up in our bill since we started.

You have a leak, and what's worse, since there are no wet spots in your yard, the leak is seeping into open space beneath your yard/somewhere.

I'd get sinkhole insurance ASAP if you don't already have it.

That thing would be spinning pretty good when you looked at it.

That is my worry. Brand new $420K house that I am worrying will sink underground.

Normally with that kind of change, the water company will contact you. They don't want major leaks like that either.

We looked at it today when I got home from work. Wasn't moving, turned on the outside faucet, it started spinning, turned it off and it stopped.

If it isn't a faulty meter, who do you hire to find out what is wrong?
