So, why do you vote for it?

You people need to quit watching TV and drinking the media's koolaid. Those are mostly brokers/buyers pushing the narrative that they control with stock footage of farm laborers working filmed to fill the news segment. Again I will say that unless you buy your crawfish directly from a farmer or commercial fisherman, you need to look more closely at your crawfish source because they can decide the price they sell at and farmers do not.

Rarely do you hear farmers making predictions unless there is a glaring factor obvious to only them that needs to be explained to your average consumer. In more normal years, farmers have no way to predict what supply/demand dynamics and prices may occur, and neither of these factors do crawfish producers control.

If there's a product to be fished commercially in LA, I know several people who do it. Mostly shrimpers and crabbers, but I know my fair share of crawfish farmers. I can count on one hand how many times I've heard any of them say they had a good year.

Great mindset frick the people that are trying to make a living by working to supply a product that is a luxury for people to have and enjoy. People like you are scum of the earth that think you’re entitled something for nothing.

Does your wife drive a 2023 or 2024 Yukon Denali? Which is it, because we know it’s one of them.

And how new is your written off F250?

Ok. So will one of you farmers esplain me how the whole process works, from flooding the fields to bagging them up, you know, crawfish for dummies. And esplain how it goes to brokers/bait people and such and on to the consumer. I'll hang up and listen. And you can use whatever numbers you want.

Been driving the same truck since 2014. Did buy my wife a base model 2017 Tahoe to haul our kids around. I guess I need to revert back to a horse and buggy to justify being a crawfish farmer….

Funny, isn't it? Condition doesn't happen with beef, pork or poultry. Those prices are straight up DC.

Kudos to you for a good natured response. I’m surrounded by farmers, and while I do love them, many of them are arrogant and don’t appreciate what they have.

I think that’s with any profession. That’s the world we live in some people are ungrateful bastards plain and simple. A lot of farmers are just simple down to earth guys that just want to make an honest living, don’t need to get rich just love what we do

When you say you seed the field, is that seed for the crawfish? And what type of seed are you talking about? And why don't the crawfish farmers broke their own goods? Too costly to buy trucks and ship to buyers across the country?

Yes seed=crawfish. The crawfish you catch in May you use to reseed rice fields. Depending on preference dome farmers might reseed 2-5 sacks per acre. As far as brokering your own crawfish some farmers do have some trucks, some just bring all their crawfish to a dock and let someone else handle the rest. It’s all about how much headache you’re willing to put up with.

If you sell your crawfish for 1.50lb and the broker sells them for 6.50, I think that's a headache I could deal with.

Generally the middleman broker is marking up $1lb. The big price increase from the farmer to the restaurant is the overhead the restaurants mark up for to their price

Don't worry about the wife's whip, but my two registered farm pickups are a 1999 F-350 with 105k and a 1987 Toyota with 236k.

Some of y'all are too worried how new farmers' vehicles are. Many people who are more overleveraged and soon to be bankrupt drive newer and nicer vehicles than the crawfish producers that I know.

Crawfish prices that buyers give to fishermen and farmers hit an all time high of $8.00 per pound today up from $6.50 last week.

Looks like I won’t be having crawfish this year I’m not paying 240-300 dollars for a 30lb sack of live crawfish

With so many people tight on funds I’m betting the farmers see a big drop in demand this year

U.S. catfish farmers could use some sales this lent. It’s been a rough year and our prices are down from last year. 1.35/lb off the pond bank last spring and now 1.15-1.20
