How is it the same? When was the last such drought?

History doesn't repeat but it rhymes. I think everyone knows what they mean. Farmers crying all the way to the new hunting camp in their new F-250s. Same story every year for all farmers.

Sorry to take this circle jerk in another direction, but in your opinion, will the spillway catch be a shitshow as well?
I was just thinking this morning about all the little crawfish festivals and school fundraiser events that happen in April and May. This situation will cause them to have to cancel if it doesn’t get better

No need to apologize, your post is exactly the reason I made this thread to bring awareness to the crawfish situation currently unfolding.

As you may or may not know, there is no wild caught crawfish being sold on the market right now as the basin is mostly dry. Areas that hardly ever dry up were arid for months and crawfish in these environments were stressed as were the farmed crop.

As a result, much is unknown right now but depending on rainfall moving forward and snowmelt/flood water coming south from the upper Mississippi Valley, there is time for these factors to change the volume of spillway crawfish being sold on the market by April and May.

Unfortunately nobody can predict or control the weather (except cloud seeders apparently) and some industry insiders that Ive spoken with seem to think that the price could very well remain somewhat elevated for the entire season. Which believe it or not is not good for producers or consumers.

In my opinion the spillway with as low as it is won’t be able to supply much crawfish unless we get a bunch of winter rain or until they snowmelt comes down from up north which won’t be til March/April

So, no wonder the Caniac is $16.99.

I could take it or leave it but I am weird and could live on the same 3 or 4 food items forever. My wife loves them but she is also price-conscious about stuff. Way more than I am so if they stay this high I can't see her asking me to grab some.

The process starts in May you seed the rice fields while the rice is growing, then you drain the rice fields in July, cut the rice, if a dry summer you fertilize and flush that field in August to keep the rice vegetation growing for a good food source. In September/October you permanently flood up that same rice field with a shallow flood and bring the water up through November/December to a full flood for crawfish. December/January you put out traps and start fishing. You run your ponds and sell to a dock. That dock has brokers/crawfish buyers pick up crawfish daily. You might have anywhere from one to six buyers picking up crawfish throughout the day. Farmers normally fish through May/June until you reseed rice fields for the next year and restart the process all over again. Sorry for the long winded answer. Hope that answers some of your questions

The truth is the drought killed off a good portion of the crawfish that was seeded this summer. If you don’t believe me idk what else to tell you. But y’all will really be screaming if we end up getting the cold weather that’s forecasted for next week. That will end up killing the little bit of crawfish that is actually out there

If crawfish farmers hadn't cried wolf since the beginning of time, people might understand. People are still going to buy. Quit the song and dance.

And nobody would be a commercial fisherman if it didn't pay. "I've been doing this 40 years and never made money or had a good year". Then why didn't you take up welding or some other means of making money

100% agree I’m the same. I will eat a steak any day of the week. I might go a couple years without eating boiled crawfish. I don’t need them at all but am very thankful for people that eat them

Certain people go on tv/news every year and cry wolf. Not one person speaks for all the other farmers. I’m very truthful when people ask how are things? I tell them if crawfish are plentiful not to overpay for crawfish and when things are bad I’ll tell them the truth.
Also of course I’ve made some money some years. I mean the goal is to make money to make living, but there’s been years where I’ve lost money that’s just the way life goes sometimes.

And that’s true for any industry and profession.
I just can’t figure out why the crawfish situation triggers the hell out of so many dumbasses. LOL.

I’m a little bummed because I purchased a pretty nice boiling set up last month and may not end up using it until April or May due to the shortages.
That’s nothing of a concern though compared to pond farmers who are possibly having their lives ruined because of this though.

Yep that’s the risk we take as being self employed its a roller coaster ride. The way things are right now there’s a lot of industries going through the same things. At the end of the day we will find a way we have no choice

Honest question. Do crawfish farmers have their crop yields insured like row crops?

I think for most of us, it was just a running joke. Like, no matter what happens, it's going to affect crawfish prices.

This is obviously a different deal, and clearly is having a negative effect on the farmers.

Nobody is happy about that, except maybe the crawfish.

For once we agree on something. Yes already boiled crawfish sales are propped up by EBT program. It’s the sole reason the state removed the can’t buy hot prepared food rule.

I’m not shocked that EBT pays for bugs, I’m pissed that it does. At these current prices eating crawfish is a luxury. If you can’t see EBT to purchase $9lb boiled crawfish as ridiculous then please say so and I will then realize the person you are.
The idea that someone who needs taxpayer assistance to get thru life doesn’t have to make necessary lifestyle adjustments because they get “free” money if what bothers me.
It these types of decisions that people live on government assistance.
And before you mention, yes I realize people fall on hard times and need these programs. However, they are also the ones who don’t become lifelong government dependents and also are not buying $9lb boiled crawfish. For once we agree on something. It’s legal to purchase hot crawfish with EBT? I thought it had to be cold
