Dat Dog employees were getting ready to close shop in the Marigny on Sunday (Jan. 22) when an unexpected patron stopped by around 2:45 a.m. Employees said a wild coyote ran into the restaurant on Frenchmen Street and stayed there for several hours until an animal trapper retrieved it. "I thought it was pretty ironic that the coyote would run into a shop called Dat Dog," said bartender David Scroggins. "The only other place I could think that it would run into is Coyote Ugly." While there initially was concern the coyote would have to be euthanized, Dat Dog spokeswoman Victoria VerHagen said Monday evening that a rescuer had stepped up: Wildlife rehabilitator Tara Shepherd is expected to retrieve the coyote from the trapper Monday night.

Sitting there minding his own business, evidently smoking a cigarette, then bam! His freedom is gone

It's pretty sad. I hear a group of yotes almost every night outside my apartment. The recent growth of neighborhoods and shopping centers has completely circled the wooded area they live in. It's only a matter of time before the woods are eliminated and the animals are euthanized for being in the wrong place.

I believe I read that the frenchmen animal was adopted by a refuge so it wouldn't be euthanized.

Wasn't there a time not too long ago in St Tammany where the coyotes were mating with dogs?

I was in high school the first time I saw a fox in my neighborhood. It blew my mind that woodland creatures were in our suburban backyard. I never knew New Orleans had coyotes, either.

Saw a fox on the southwest side of downtown Shreveport Sat. a.m. by the train tracks. It was very ratty looking, and acted sick. My Aussie was running to engage it but I called her off. It started walking away when one would normally run. I figured it was sick, wormy or both.
