It was. Much better here. In fact the Director of my department is rabid about making sure you account for your comp time and take it

Did you read the rest of the post? It's my business because it creates more work for myself and everyone in the office. If it had no effect on me I wouldn't be bitching about it.

Again, I know she might just be going through a really unlucky stretch, but it's been going for about 7 or 8 months now.

As for checking obituaries, I didn't think to do it in the beginning when I didn't doubt her. And the excuse isn't always deaths. Just last week I had to cover for her on something at the last minute because her kid's car broke down somewhere. There's always something.

I had an employee (lets call him Bob) call me one night almost crying that his mother had a heart attack in Arkansas and that he was leaving to go be with her for a couple of days. He stated that his daughter had a school function that night but they would be leaving as soon as it was over. The next day a second employee asked me if I had seen Bob that day. I told him no and explained the situation. employee #2 said "That's funny, My nephew just called me from the bar and said that "Bob" left his wallet and drivers license last night when he closed the place down at 2 am". I was told to be careful with Bob and that he was notorious about death and hospital excuses with work. This was the first time I was able to catch him. Needless to say he was terminated.

It's just aggravating because everyone else in the office has to pick up that person's slack, but nobody is going to risk calling her out on it and risk being the biggest dick in the office if you're wrong.
If you're in leadership, at some point you absolutely have to call her on it and ask her to bring in an excuse or proof of some sort of some of these incidents.

You should leave work with an "illness" on a day that this person calls in. Stalk them and film.

Kind of off topic, but useful tip for the kind of person you're describing: anytime you get a flat tire, go visit someone in the hospital, go to a funeral, etc., take a picture.

This way whenever you want to fake something like that later for work, you can send your boss a confirmation photo to show you're not bullshitting.

This reminds me of a guy who used to work for us. He was constantly missing work for one reason or another and finally one day his boss called him out for it bc no one had heard from him in days and then couldn't come in for the one day he absolutely needed to be there. He ended up sending us a picture of himself in the hospital and another of an IV in his arm claiming he had mono and was too weak to call anyone.
Now the guy is living up in Utah with his mother whom he told me had died just a few weeks after be had started. Yep that was another reason he had to miss work for a few days.

This reminds me of a comment a college professor said one time. He said the worst thing to be is the grandmother of a college student because they die about 3 times per semester !!

Deaths are fairly easy to confirm online.

Watched a secretary get fired years ago for lying about her dad dying.

Used it as an excuse. VP wanted to send flowers - she wouldn't answer her phone. Someone tracked her mom down and her dad hadn't been heard from since she was in high school. Turns out she went to the beach with a guy she had met the week before.

It was ugly.

What a dumb slut.

bullshite. They are probably paid the same. Why should he have to do 100% of his work and a portion of hers for the same wage. I hate fricking slackasses. Do your job or hit the bricks. People like her are horrible for team moral.

When I was at Best Buy, we had this guy whose grandmother died 3x. I was the only one who caught onto it and when I mentioned it to my supervisor, he got let go lol.

This year I've had 2 uncles, 1 grandfather, and 2 close family friends die within 6 months. So maybe you should stop being a dick, and try to be a little more understanding.

It won't kill you to throw a few more bags of fries in the grease to pick up the slack.

I believe sick and annual leave are part of the compensation package. I never interfered with an employee taking time off. Even if it was inconvenient for me to cover for them.

Most sick/annual leave is accrued as you work, you are not just given 2 weeks to be used immediately. If so, then some people will use the 2 weeks and then quit.

Do not give this person advanced leave since these times off happens a lot.

Tell her to take unpaid time off. If that throws her below full-time status it hurts even more.

Do not let her work extra hours just to make up lost time. You need her there during the day Monday thru Friday. Not on Saturday or Sunday when no one else is working.

Document everything extensively, even denied requests.

Someone else will need to take time off eventually and the first employee will complain you would not let her off but let others take time off.

Document, document, document.

Unless I'm the boss, I just mind my own fricking business.

You don't know what people are going through in their lives.

I once had a coworker who had many suspicious absences like this. They coincided with the mornings after the drunken beatings that she took from her husband.

Brush up on your reading comprehension. The issue isn't with my sympathy, it's that it's possible she's making it up and making work worse for everybody else in the process. As evidenced by all the anecdotes in this thread people lie about this all the time, so it warrants a little skepticism.

Which is obviously why I brought the topic for debate on a message board instead of something more drastic.
