Well explained.

As a southerner who grew up in a county seat where part of the family had lived for more than two centuries, the "Once removed" and "twice removed" came naturally, that was when very few husbands had two or more sets of children by a wife and then by multiple trophy wives.

This. I’ve nearly come to fisticuffs trying to explain this to people. Look at the common ancestor. If the common ancestors are grandparents, then you’re first cousins. If the common ancestor are great grandparents then you’re second cousins and so forth. If your grandparents are my great grandparents then we’re first cousins, once removed.

I’m close to my 2nd and 3rd cousins. It’s not that complicated.

I have a first cousin I definitely WHH when she was a twentysomething. After she got married and popped out a few kids she became morbidly obese. So I for one an glad marrying cousins is socially frowned on.

I had a co-worker tell me yesterday that his first cousin's child would be his second cousin and in turn, would be his own child's third cousin. My own mother tried explaining to me when I was a kid that her first cousin was my second cousin and her first cousin's kids were my second, third and so on.
But...they were both wrong.

This is a much easier way to explain it, shorthand:

"cousins" are intra-generation

"removed cousins" are inter-generation

So, you and your 1st cousin are...cousins.

You and your 1st cousin's child are...1st cousins, once removed.

Your child and your 1st cousin's child are...2nd cousins.

I didn’t read any of that.

I just came to say, no you can’t have sex with your cousin.

Your great uncle's granddaughter is your 2nd cousin. Your great uncle's daughter is your first cousin, once removed. Look at the chart again. You missed a generation.
