They should have appointed a neutral third party to act as trustee for the guy. Lease him an apartment, hire a financial manager, get him invested and living on the returns. Poor people suck at managing money and hobos are even worse.

Nah, He'll either be a crackhead living in luxury or dead.

They did all that. There’s stuff we’re missing from the story for sure.
I know they bought him a used truck and a camper. And he blew through $25k by giving it to family (whom I’m sure he owed money) and spending it on drugs.

There's a lesson to be learned here.
Folks donating money directly or indirectly may feel like they are doing something noble, but there is no way to know.

Those people should be in jail if they spent any of that money.
Are they contractually obligated to give him the money if it was raised on his behalf? I don't really know the ins and outs of GoFundMe.

Just just give him the damn money. You raised if for him. If he pisses it away it is his fault.

According to the judge the couple must account for each dollar collected. He also said they had to give him what was left of the money.
There is a large gap between what they spent on him, what was collected, and what is left.

After reading this story over and over, I'm beginning to think the whole story was a scam.
I bet they were all involved. Money to get drugs and whatnot. They got way more than expected. The veteran didn't get his fair share as promised. Now he's mad...

He denied misusing the funds but admitted to the Inquirer that he spent $500 of it at a casino.

Why does anyone ever think that giving money to the homeless is ever a good idea?
Posted on 8/31/18 at 10:08 am to fr33manator
Are we sure the homeless guy isn't Aaron Kaufman from Fast N Loud?

I understand that, but that is per judges orders, not what the contract states between the couple and GofundMe.
IOW, can I start a GoFundMe claiming to raise money for starving African chi'ren, take the money and give the finger to the starving African chi'ren? You'd think the money would be earmarked for the cause, but how you spend that money is arbitrary.

I am not an attorney but would guess this is setting some kind of precedent that will be far reaching. It may mean that all GoFundMe money collected needs to go to what ever they say it will from now on.
There have been many fake campaigns.

Doesn't sound sexy, but if they had put that money in an annuity, earning at 8%, he could have received $40,000/year for 20 years.

Hate to ask, but which of those guys is the actual bum? they pretty much look the same to me.

I don’t think it’s that cut and dried.
If it’s true that he has a hard drug addiction, the only ones that would actually end up benefitting from the money raised are his drug dealers and junky partners. And the funeral when he ODs. Not to imply at all that it’s okay for them to spend it - clearly it isn’t.
He should probably just get the money regardless but setting up a trust or something would be the best thing for him.
