That's what gets me. There's nothing in the song that would make you think it is about a gay couple at all.
But I'm sure Facebook will be full of people protesting now that the video came out about how it's being forced upon them. If you are so close to being game that a music video turns you, you were always gay.

I love Childers’ music. Saw him this summer. He’s always been a bit woke tho and sometimes downright cunty to his fans (ie one fan tweeted disappointment at no Feathered Indians after a concert) and he responded that they could go frick themselves that they were lucky to even get to see him play at all. (Something to that effect). He sound a like a bit of a bitch, but he is damn talented. New song is solid but sounds like something Adele would write.

Was the actual song about gay dudes?
Someone said it was written in 2016, and quoted parts of OP’s article make it more that the video is focused on 2 gay dudes but not original intent of song (doesn’t matter from this point forward with video).
Is the video just a reflection of singer’s original story to tell over the years or is this video and subsequent promotion redefining the story?

That doesn’t preclude the video and press releases about video from being pandering.
He has actually redefined an old love song into being about gay coldminer love.
Surely a cousin like that deserved his own gay song to go along with his own gay video.
When he sings it now is it about his love for his cousin? Maybe they had an awkward pause…

Some of these pretentious pricks (looking at you Isbell) act like writing a song is impossible.
So instead of typing out a response, I recorded a song on an out of tune $400 guitar with old strings with a 6 year old iphone in about as much time as it took to type this.
