"There are places that are smaller than our combined population, that have access to more diverse retail, more diverse shopping, more diverse opportunity."

"Councilman Oliver Thomas is asking what needs to change to give residents in the East an opportunity and options."

"Councilman Thomas has garnered a study focusing on understanding challenges, finding resources and free space in his district, because he wants to see less discount retailers, beauty supply and tire shops."

Aside from the Winn Dixie on Chef Menteur and the Walmart on Bullard Avenue, there are no other supermarket options for those living in New Orleans East, where roughly one-fifth of the city's population resides.

How about you make it not a lawless shithole where criminals go to chop up cars and dump bodies

Lowes closed because inventory was being stolen faster than they could stock the shelves. Where else in the country do you see Lowes not being successful?

Blame your shithead constituents and not the businesses.

He’s gonna want to ask his constituents to stop killing each other first. And if he wants economic development, he’ll want to talk with parents about educational opportunities for their kids beyond high school so that corporations will have local human capital. It’s not hard and the free money is there.

1/5th the population.

75% of the crime

0 contributions towards the city.

The east is lawless.

do they think a whole foods magically appearing will solve all their problems? They always talk about "coffee shops, parks, thriving small business". You simply cannot have ANY of those things with a crime problem. Oh, and BTW, none of those businesses better be owned by a white person, cuz that's "racist" and not "diverse"

They should just start making tire bonfires out there to complete the look.

“Food deserts” are one of my favorite tropes of the SJW crowd. As if capitalism doesn’t exist in the hood and these “deserts” are not a direct response to the actions of the people in the neighborhood robbing them blind.

Oliver is not dumb, especially by city councilman standards. This is him playing to his electorate.

The “study” is probably just a cover story to explain why he’s meeting with retailers to discuss what incentives the city will pay them to open in the East, and what kickbacks will come to him if he gets the deal done.

It’s racist to not keep your store open to be robbed.

I'm interested to see how Rouses on North Ardenwood does. It's on a major road and everything, but it's walkable from the projects. I think they'll have big theft problems.

New Orleans East should be abandoned

If you choose to live there, you’re on your own

Grocers are conspiring for black folk not to have fresh fruits and veggies. We need programs and studies to address this. I’d like to thank Councilman Thomas for his efforts.
