One thing that bolsters this false bravado is a lot of pilots tell people “ahh shucks, it’s nothing really, anyone can do it”

Yeah, with ATC assitance and a long runway with no bad crosswind for sure.
But I did use to have a private pilots license.

I could put you in a sim and walk you through, you pick, T-38 virtual sim, F-4, F-15, B-727 through 787, or anything else and hold your hand and get you back on the ground, then if I give you the jet and say off you go, good luck, you’d be dead in minutes

I dunno. If I had an expert that walked me through it step by step I’m pretty sure I could manage it and not kill everyone. Might mess up the plane but maybe survive

I am 100% confident I could get it on the ground. I’d bet every dollar I have to my name on that.
Now what sort of condition that plane, and the people on board look like afterwards… that’s a different matter.

I can follow directions so if I had someone telling me what to do then more than likely. Other than that, everyone better hope I get lucky when I just start pushing buttons.

You are my favorite type to put in the sim. I’ve had 8,000 hr flight engineers that would bitch about every landing, that sat inches from pilots for decades, put them in the seat and turn them loose. Some couldn’t even cruise missle us into the runway. Some could get us to the runway, but no way we could safely land.
Granted, this was in a much less technically advanced aircraft than a 787…
