Wonder how many people that get caught thought they'd be able to do it easily? Anyone ever seen a percentage anywhere of just how many actually do get away with it?

Random or motivated? Random? Probably and almost definitely. I think that any moderately intelligent person could probably get away with murder with a little planning. A person probably doesn't even have to be intelligent. Look at Gary Ridgway. He murdered dozens, and he is literally retarded. You just have to remove yourself from any form of motive or connection and do it far enough away from where you live. There's always the chance that a low probability thing goes wrong. There's no guarantee, but I like my odds if it was something that I really wanted to do.

Necessary disclaimer: Murder is morally repugnant, and I do not condone such behavior.

Going off by memory but I believe the clearance rate is a little over 60%. So, there's a good chance, with good planning, you could be "successful"
