Could you find 1m dollars to save your life in 24 hours? by
Thousand is easy. Should have went with a million

Thats irrelevant.
My point is simply that having 1M dollars no longer means you are wealthy. Not in the way it meant 20 years ago.
I would think that most people that are 40 y/o have at least a 1M saved, no?

Ok so how much should the average 40 y/o have saved?

College degree good self discipline and upwardly mobile career? I’d say debt free and $250K total net worth at age 40 would be well on the way to retiring with $1.5 to $2MM if the stock market performs about average.
Anything more than $250K is gravy and if you bought a home in your 20s or early 30s I’d bet you’d likely be closer to or over $400K when adding home equity

That is bizarrely out of touch with reality. Have you missed the bi-annual thread about how the majority of people in the US don't have $1,000 in savings?
Even if you shift it to just white-collar workers the time between 20 and 40 is when they are generally buying a house, having expensive rugrats and being less than steller about savings.
I do agree that $1 million certainly doesn't mean what it used to in terms of wealth.

In 2004, what would have been this 40 yr old's starting salary as a fresh undergraduate?

Not in 24 hours, very few people on this planet have access to that much cash they can access in a short amount of time without doing something highly illegal. Could I come up with that amount? Yes, but not in a 24 hour time frame.

I mean to save my life as in it’s assured I die if I don’t get it? Yea I could I’m sure. I have some very rich uncles and if it was life or death I’m sure they’d do it. If not..I’m going to load up and rob a casino and pray to God I make it out alive
