Zeller said that he believes the Bayou Boogaloo brand is strong enough to survive a relocation. He and his staff are considering moving to Deutsches Haus, the German cultural center on Bayou St. John near Esplanade Avenue, he said. They are also looking at three spots along the lakefront, as well as other festival sites in the city, such as Armstrong Park, Lafayette Square and Woldenberg Park.

In addition, Zeller said, he’d consider taking the annual event outside of New Orleans to Jefferson Parish, which he believes might be more hospitable to the fest than New Orleans has recently been.

The festival, which took place (May 17-19), charged admission for the first time in 2019. Zeller said the $10-per-day or $20-per-weekend charge was necessary mostly because the city steeply increased its fee to use the public space along Bayou St. John. Zeller said that the city charged approximately $35,000 this year, plus a $5,000 damage deposit.

In 2018, the city charged a $5,000 fee with a $1,000 damage deposit. Last year, the festival also agreed to spend $5,000 in improvements to the public space along the bayou. Bayou Boogaloo is presented by Friends of Bayou St. John, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the upgrades of the urban waterway.

A new administration, a new deal

According to the city’s Deputy Chief of Staff Liana Elliot, the Cantrell administration negotiated the festival fee differently than past administrations. Elliot explained that the land around the bayou where the festival takes place is owned by the state but administered by the city. The city, she said, is required by state law to rent the property at a fair market rate. A similar event in nearby City Park would cost the presenter $43,000, but the city reduced the fee because the bayou property lacks the park’s amenities.

With the amount of trash the attendees leave that explains the price.

For something celebrating the bayou they sure do trash it.

Harvey Canal would be a fantastic place to host this event! Plenty of parking between 4th Street and the Westbank Expressway. What could go wrong?

These are mostly empty threats. They aren't going to move it.

The City is doing there typical extortion game every time they think they can squeeze a dollar from someone. They are talking back in order to reach a deal with the city.

Why would you want to float around in water where people sink their cars for insurance fraud? I remember a few years ago someone drove into the bayou and drowned and they pulled out like 20 cars looking for the one that went in.

I bet they charge gospel fest on the bayou way less that that this year. Can't wait for that open records request.

By the way, this...

is my idea of hell. This looks miserable. White trash floating on a disgusting bayou with God knows what in it. This shite makes tubing down the Bogue Chitto look down right cultured.

its not like you have to get in the water It’s a park with a bayou running through it. There’s plenty of space on land with live music and food vendors

It’s really not a dirty Bayou and a hell of a lot less trashier people than a tubing trip.

That does seem like a pretty steep fee to charge them. Meet in the middle

no shite because it's like 1/10th as many people

the BB crowds are huge given how small the space on either side of the bayou is. $35K doesn't sound unreasonable at all.

Zeller wanted to charge last year before people pitched a fit.

Honestly, he’d have a helluva lot more advocates if he had a better cleanup plan.
