Cortana’s local tenants frustrated, nervous as national retailers pack up

For tenants like Basil Hasan, manager of Hip Hop Fashion, losing Sears could mean the difference between viability and closure. After Macy’s closed last year, his sales dropped about 25%. He’s not sure he can afford to lose another 25%—or more.

“We’ll stay as long as I’m eating,” he says. “But it will be risky.”

Joseph Toma is worried, too. The owner of the T-Shirt Factory, which makes customized T-shirts, is the longest surviving independent retailer in the mall. His store opened in 1982, when Cortana was just five years old and was the biggest retail game in the market. Back then, there was a waiting list to get in, he recalls. Now, whole storefronts are vacant and one of his silk screen artists has taken it upon herself to water the tree in the mall atrium outside their door so it doesn’t die.
quote:
“They’re cutting back on maintenance, security, everything,” he says.

Local tenants say they’re tired of talk. Shoaib Mojy has owned and operated a jewelry cart in the mall since 2001. Over the years, he has seen his business gradually dry up. On good days, he might sell $40 or $50 worth of jewelry. On many days, he doesn’t sell anything.

“I don’t know how much longer I can afford to stay,” he says. “We’ll just have to see.”

Cry me a river. Tell your culture to stop killing malls/neighborhoods/ect.

Gary's not able to play paintball. He represents too big of a target.

It's over. He may as well face reality now.

A dawn of the dead style paintball or lazer tag business would KILL IT

seems like a pet store that only sold pit bulls would thrive there

Well, Mall of Louisiana... Looks like you're up.

If Hip Hop Fashion can't make it, what does that mean for the smaller businesses?

Read an article on that chain a while back. Pretty much the company's business model wasn't sustainable and faced some very heavy debts by the time they closed off the stores and filed for bankruptcy.
Cortana is starting to look really rough now. Used to be kept up pretty well. Went a few weeks ago and lots of the trees and plants in the atriums were dead and pretty rough looking.
Can't see it surviving much longer.

Dude is almost bigger than that house. LOL
I noticed that Gary has quoted himself in his Facebook background. "Do good and seek justice" - G. Chambers.

5 - 10 years would be my guess. Look at the demise of Bon Marche & Cortana and be guided by that. Esplanade in Kenner and Oakwood on the Westbank as well.
The only local mall that has maintained a growing business seems to be Lskedide in Metairie. Indoor malls are going the way of Ringling Bros. circus.
