Coronavirus pandemic may lead to 75,000 "deaths of despair" from suicide, drug and alcohol

COVID-19 has directly claimed tens of thousands of U.S. lives, but conditions stemming from the novel coronavirus — rampant unemployment, isolation and an uncertain future — could lead to 75,000 deaths from drug or alcohol abuse and suicide, new research suggests.
Deaths from these causes are known as "deaths of despair." And the COVID-19 pandemic may be accelerating conditions that lead to such deaths.
"Deaths of despair are tied to multiple factors, like unemployment, fear and dread, and isolation. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were already an unprecedented number of deaths of despair. We wanted to estimate how this pandemic would change that number moving forward," said one of the study's authors, Benjamin Miller. He's chief strategy officer for the Well Being Trust in Oakland, Calif.

"The isolation is causing people to lose boundaries on their behaviors," Miller explained.

The researchers said the biggest way to help prevent some of these deaths is to get people back to work.

"Addiction patients are relapsing, and a lot of patients who don't have drug use or alcohol problems are drinking more now, sometimes every day from 4 or 5 p.m., and they don't stop until they sleep," he said.

That would mean the cure literally was worse than the disease.

People aren't meant to become complacent. We all are born with a restless spirit, it just gets forced down.

Something a lot of people with common sense knew 2 months ago. WTF have we done?

That and people have/are losing their livelihoods. I feel fortunate my current business is stable but I did lose my previous business during the 07-08 crash. I know what a deep hole of despair that causes and do not wish it on anyone.

Not to mention the people who couldn’t get preventative care from their doctors. Think about how many heart issues or high blood pressures could have been diagnosed and treated vs not

I read the other day that there could be an additional 1.4 million tuberculosis deaths (world wide) over the next 4 years because of all of the focus on COVID and people not getting testing and treatment.

Damn,I don't think Americans are this fricking helpless.

People become desperate and hopeless with no money, nothing to do, and no control over their future.
IMO we will soon reach a point where the restrictions caused more morbidity and suffering than the disease.

4 “pm”? Yeah there’s something wrong with them, that’s normal happy hour. They need to step up to the am

It’s also the isolation aspect. Imagine someone who lives alone in a city. They chose that life so they could have privacy when they want but live close to work and friends and things to do. Suddenly, they can’t see their friends or their families. They can’t go to work or to church. They can’t go anywhere. They’re just alone. Every minute of every day for 2 months with no purpose, no future, no support system, no love life, and all their hobbies gone.
This isolation drove me mad weeks ago. It’s nearly driven me to take my own life on more than a few occasions. I’ve never felt more alone, more worthless, more wasteful, weak, adrift, and helpless.
