Man can someone please help me out? I really don’t know who or what to believe as far as the severity of this shite. I’m not terribly worried about myself, but it’s my children (6 year old and 11 months old) and my grandmother who I’m worried about.
At first I wasn’t really concerned. Mostly apathetic. But since we had our first reported case in our parish last night I’m sort of second guessing myself.
How are you guys handling your children? Are y’all still letting them play with friends outside? Are you keeping them away from their friends? My wife is a nurse, and she thinks I’m sort of overreacting, but she understands.
Just looking for other opinions I guess. Fire away

It hardly affects kids at all. And if it does it’s no worse than a cold. Chill.

It is at least an improvement over a couple weeks ago when we couldn't test anyone unless they had foreign travel to a hot zone

Also reading the virus is still really bad for middle aged people. Not dying, but severe damage to organs while hospitalized. Which is still incredibly concerning. Anyone else hearing these two things?

Maryland is effectively on lockdown. Essential workers only on any form of mass transit. Passengers and workers only at airports. Everyone encouraged to work from home. He shutdown non-essential businesses and relaxed liquor laws.
Heard him speak on Bloomberg a half hour ago. Don't have a link yet.

Personally, I don't think that keeping children completely cooped up in the house for weeks is feasible. I think that your kids should have a few friends that they play with. I think that the overall risk of your kids getting COVID-19 is very small.
And this isn't going to hurt your kids if they get it. There have only been a few cases worldwide of kids dying who had COVID-19, and they were kids who were on the brink of death from other diseases anyway.
Could your kids pick up the virus and then give it to your grandmother. Yes, possibly. But the World Health Organization's report from Wuhan found that, after studying over 40,000 cases, none of the research team could recall any instance of child-to-adult transmission.
Now, that doesn't prove that child-to-adult transmission is rare, but we know that children show very mild symptoms of COVID-19 and they are unlikely to cough, and we know that coughing is a major factor in the spread of the disease.
So, personally, if it were my kids, I'd let them play with a select group of friends whose parents I'd trust to tell me if anyone in their house was sick.
But everyone has to make their own judgment calls about this kind of thing.

she’s been on quarantine for a week now, but previously was very active with the senior citizen center before the outbreak Just for clarity, I’m not freaking out. My life has gone on as usual, I was just conflicted on how I should handle my very active 6 year old

Stop worrying about “first reported.” More than likely it’s been in your parish, they just weren’t testing and looking for it.

I don’t. A lot kids probably have it but it is probably like most every other cold to them so nobody pays it any attention. But then they spread it.

nurse what is your institution doing for breathing treatments?
new guidelines say not to do nebulizers and we dont want to send in RT to do nebs q4h anyway because it wastes PPE
we were considering buying some of those fancy new respimat LABAs but theyre expensive and presents the worry of what to do with the inhaler to make sure it stays with the patient throughout their stay but doesnt leave the room unless the patient does

I'm working from home. Kids mostly doing school work, but definitely not associating with other kids (but we're spaced out a bit from other folks, too). Only interaction with kids that aren't mine is through their games. THat said, kids have been the LEAST affected by COVID, by FAR. I'd be more worries about your grandmother.
And my wife is a nurse, too. Two weeks ago, she told me that people in the medical field were not panicking over this. As of Monday, they will be trying to move 90% of their patients to telehealth. Their attitudes have changed drastically.....screening all patients by phone prior to their appointments and turning away any patient who so much as coughs when they enter the office.
shite is real.
