E. Panic has led to a lot more people coming to ERs that shouldn't that would normally just take Tylenol Cold and Flu and wait it out at home.

Very key point.

Went out to lunch today. Pretty much business as usual on the streets where I live.

Italy did worse yesterday. Search Italy and coronavirus on Twitter or Google for more info.

Swine flu first case in the US was April. By June there were 1 million cases.

Here's the CDC report from June 26, 2009.

27,717 "confirmed and probable cases". 127 deaths.

Is this accurate. Obviously only by Feb 3rd.

So there were more cases and deaths at roughly the same time, is that what is being proposed here?

Holy hell this is a major scare tactic. I guess we should ignore all the data points and use our feelings.

No matter how hard you try, we are not getting the pandemic you wish for.

I could care less about your feelings about this. I have a family of my own that I am trying to keep safe. Having people blow it off and act like ignorant fools is what I am trying to avoid.

I will repost what I stated before with facts on why your H1N1 talking point is wrong...

quote:

A) Using his numbers, swine flu had a case fatality rate of 0.04%. Comparable with the flu. COVD-19 has ranged from 0.5-4% depending on if the area is being overwhelmed due to the number of cases (Wuhan/Italy). On the low end, that is ten times worse than H1N1.

B) Looking at the total number of H1N1 cases globally after it spent months doubling over and over again is a terrible way to compare. Do you understand basic exponential growth and doubling time?

H1N1 started in April, and by mid-May it was at 3,000 cases. That was about a month and a half. Right now we are at around the month a half point at which cases starting popping up in the US (early February). We are at 1,500 cases. In another couple days we will surpass the 3,000 case mark once testing becomes more available. At that point with H1N1 they had experienced 3 deaths. We are currently at 41.

Again the data is pointing to this being ten times worse than H1N1. If it becomes as widespread as H1N1, you are talking about a lot more deaths than H1N1... IT'S WHY THIS IS NOT TO BE TREATED LIKE H1N1.

That post was yesterday, and the US case count exceeded 3,000 much quicker than I anticipated (currently at 3,800).

The case could be made that for the healthy, non-obese, under 50 population, this will have a mortality rate comparable with H1N1 for the same age group - and that would be a fair - and hopefully true - point. But its impact on the overall population will be worse if it spreads as much as H1N1.

Muh public healthcare!!

There are no more excuses. This thing is coming and we will have to change our way of living to slow down the spread. Otherwise this thing is going to do serious, serious damage.

Is that why you confused minimum and maximum?

I have a hard time believing China's death numbers. Italy is closing in on them pretty fast.

I'm not proposing anything. I'll leave that to you and some of our other OT epidemiologists. Just pointing out that, according to CDC reports at the time, cases of "swine flu" were not at the 1 million mark by June.
