There’s been maybe two posts total today spouting doom and gloom. The guy saying 500k will die and the guy saying this will get to 40 million cases by the end of May.

It’s been pretty tame. And we haven’t even really discussed the response in here. I’ve tried. I want to know what y’all think should be a reasonable response to this should be. All this canceling is way overboard to me. But no entity wants to act like they’re doing nothing. It’s an arms race to see who’s going to be the last to cancel something and get blamed for not doing it soon enough. If that’s not hysteria, I don’t know what is. Not talking about it the thread in general. No one is making these decisions here. I find it astonishing though.

If you think Italy is a 3rd world or anywhere close, you haven’t been to an actual 3rd world country. Their healthcare is certainly much better than any 3rd world shithole

Aside from elderly folks, the group this sucks for most

High school students in AP classes

Testing is in May.

This virus is going to shut down vital instructor time.

Kids will have to prepare on their own

Not allowing people to congregate has already started. Seems like it honestly.

Is there a choice between 1st and 3rd? Or between USA and Venezuela?

Well which ones have not?

At this point it’s italy and Iran vs the rest. No one thinks Iran is a clean place to be so that really leaves Italy where it has nothing to do with canceling sporting events.

There’s developed, developing, and underdeveloped

The 1st (US and allies/US aided), 2nd (USSR and allies/aided), and 3rd world (neutral) is outdated. 3rd world countries were generally poorer countries that were deemed to have little value.

Italy isn’t as developed as some other parts of western Europe but it’s still considered a developed country.

It is not hard to see how things get out of control in situations like that.

Anyone that went through Katrina can see that.

Untrue. I was there in 2015 and 2018 and there was no smell coming from the water. Now if there's bad flood? Yeah, there will be odor but I bet Houston stank after the floods from the hurricane.

So are we all dead or is this a nothingburger if you just be sanitary? The cancellation of life going on right now is getting ridiculous

99% are going to be fine. That should make you feel good enough right there, but it’s not the flu and people need to take this more seriously and work together. This involves everyone young and old. Don’t go to the doctor for every sniffle and sneeze, take care of yourself at home if you are well. There is nothing they can do for you if you have coronavirus and don’t have breathing difficulties. Don’t go in public if you are sick.

The only thing we can do is slow the rate of spread of the infection by limiting interactions. We should only limit interactions if the health system can’t deliver quality care from being overwhelmed, otherwise business as usual. This may never happen we just don’t know, but I would prepare for localized areas that need to be shut down if the spread happens too fast in that area.

The reactions (cancellations) you are seeing right now are a result of every city not knowing if they are sitting on a time bomb of cases that will overwhelm their city. It’s the result of a lack of testing. If we had adequate community testing these cities would be more confident that their ERs aren’t about to be overrun, until then they are bracing for an influx of cases and trying to mitigate that.
