Shortness of breath for sure
If you have any members that are at particular high risk such as COPD, very elderly, cardiovascular disease, immune compromised, etc...
I would invest in a oxygen saturation meter (aka pulse oximeter). They are maybe $15 at the pharmacy. If they have shortness of breath monitoring the oxygen saturation is also another data point to tell you there status. If it starts dropping they need to get to the hospital ASAP.
If you want more info just let me know
Much appreciated. Right now it is mostly a high fever. Trying to weigh the tradeoff of taking them to a minute clinic to get tested for the flu vs waiting it out. Don't want to to take them into a pediatrician where they will have to wait for who knows how long surrounded by other sick kids.
We do have a pulse oximeter as one of our other children has had asthma issues in the past.
Odds are good it is the flu, but just want to have an abundance of caution in the improbable off chance it is something more. Its tough because I see no significant difference in initial symptoms between the flu and this virus from the reputable websites.

You sound like every other medical professional I know.
All they’ve said is that there’s little to worry about in terms of the illness. Just wash your hands.

So Scruffy is worried about his ER shift being busy?
I can understand that

Yeah. Let’s extrapolate bad data. That’s always helpful.

Keeping people calm is the BEST course of action
I trust you on that.
I'm just pissed off that there probably will be a panic and over-reaction locally to this. I'm not as concerned with getting the virus myself (maybe I should be?).
I'm just bothered by the selfish actions of one person are going to make my local area fricking hell for the foreseeable future.
Yes, I understand that outlook is also selfish, but it's a different kind of selfish so I don't think it's necessarily hypocritical.

Don't forget that after is it 48 hours of symtoms that Tamiflu or the other new med really isn't prescribed.
Hope your child is better soon.

There is no more prevention of this.
The biggest issue is that those who should be doing their best to keep people calm, the media, is so eaten up with politics that they can’t see the forest for the trees.
This isn’t political.
Panic is what takes a volatile situation and blows it up.

We should all be selfish imho.

Oh I didn’t realize you were talking about a kid, and I didn’t realize it was actively ongoing right now.
I wouldn’t change anything you would normally do right now. My suggestion of the pulse oximeter was in a theoretical situation where hospital wait times are high and you don’t know if it’s worth going in and being exposed to sick patients. We are nowhere near that point right now.
I would act like you normally would right now

Imagine if H1N1 hit this year instead of 2009 and was actually killing young people unlike Covid. We’d have riots and anarchy right now.

Panic, like we see on here and on the news, worsens it because now any cough, congestion, fever, rash, stubbed toe, or chapped lips now becomes “concern for coronavirus”.
I’m not concerned about the virus or seeing those with it.
I’m concerned about those who now attribute every symptom to it because we have fed societal panic out of a misguided belief of “being appropriately aware”.
It is bullshite.

No, it’s more than just washing hands. Being away from people coughing up the germs is more important.
I am on a large physician message board and can promise you the places that are seeing this are not as nonchalant about it.

So what. Just test them and if negative move on. The problem is if you aren’t allowed to test for mild disease.

Because kids would actually be dying. With the way the media is covering this once something happens to kids and young people all hell breaks loose.

Reporting that there is a 10% death rate or even a 3.5% death rate is inappropriate in every situation.
