The US simply isn't a country of much innovation these days. We have drive through daiquiri shops but can't put something like this together?

Why has the cdc been so slow?

I'd bet that every state will have a confirmed case by Friday.

Numbers exploding as anticipated. Westchester looking like a NY hotspot.

Like I've previously posted, my hope is that it's intentional as to have the numbers slowly increase over time rather than a mass influx of reported positive results. The idea is to ease the chaos and anxiety.
It makes sense, otherwise it's just incompetence.

Can someone give me a quick explanation as to why the cdc has been so slow in getting test kits out?
This is their job, why are they not being quicker?
The cdc is staffed my career officials who have made public health their calling in life
Why are they not being more proactive?

You have people in this thread saying, oh we have only 17 deaths, its not bad at all. How naive is that? You have this virus causing a European country like Italy to quarantine 10 million people and shut down essentially all economic activity to try and contain this thing. Do people really think what happened with Italy cant happen here just because we are America?

CDC
They're slow because they are terrible. Because they fricked up initially.
It's going to be a shite show reporting accurate results from the state to federal level as well.
About to See how much we really suck as a nation and moreso in the near future. If we sent department of human resources in on them, they'd probably take their kids away. And we all know how bad DHR is!
Just wait until China, who makes 95 percent of our drugs, cuts us off.
Surprise!

The WHO had already developed test kits. We could have used those but the CDC decided they wanted to develop their own test because they were concerned about false positives (testing positive when you don’t really have the disease).
It took them awhile to develop and send the kits. When they did the kits ultimately had a flaw and didn’t work right. They had to redesign the test kits.
In addition, strict FDA laws prevented private companies from developing their own test.

Beat you to the punch on the CDC response (just barely) WAWA. Like mine better. Got to add a little humor for understanding.

Some of us have been saying for a month that what is going to happen is the initial panic will subside. Living with this will become the new normal. The new normal will be people will get sick. There will be areas of hot spots that overwhelm the local hospitals. Those areas will have to be quarantined to slow the spread until the healthcare system can catch up. The entire country will never be put on quarantine, that doesn’t accomplish anything.
We need to mobilize response teams (doctors, respirators, national guard, etc.) that are ready to move quickly to a hot spot and lock it down for a few weeks until the spread slows. The rest of the country should carry on as usual.
It’s not a 100% guarantee, we could get lucky with changing weather, virus mutations, or antiviral therapies. But without those factors it’s inevitable.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said today that it would allow new diagnostics technologies to be used to test for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, at elite academic hospitals and healthcare facilities around the country.
The agency’s new initiative comes as critics have assailed various U.S. government agencies for being woefully underprepared to effectively address the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country despite being aware of the potential risks the virus posed since the first cases were reported in Wuhan, China in early December.
The new policy allows laboratories to begin to use validated COVID-19 diagnostics before the FDA has completed review of the labs’ Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) requests, the agency said in a statement.
