It’s basically the only option at that point, or you accept people dying before they even get care. It will be interesting to see if Italy and SK get to that point, and what steps they take.
They are digging themselves out of that hole, but thanks to that idiot preacher SK hit that point a few days ago.

Scruffy, question:
have y’all been given any sort of clinical treatment information updates? Sort of an official statement from the CDC filtering through the noise that chloroquine/protease inhibitors/etc showing effectiveness in treatment?

Remember, I am in pediatric emergency. One, this isn’t a big issue for pediatrics, and two, with the ER, I don’t manage much beyond the stabilization phase.
That is more of a critical care or infectious disease specialists ballpark.

Just got this email from United.
quote:
I consider you part of our United family and your safety remains our highest priority.
We are in the business of serving people and in the midst of this coronavirus outbreak it's important that we give you as much flexibility as possible when planning your next trip. But it's also important that we give you as much information as possible about the procedures we follow to clean our aircraft and maintain a sanitary environment once we're in the air.
Our teams are in daily contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), federal agencies and other global health organizations to share the most up-to-the-minute information to ensure the actions we're taking are comprehensive and appropriate.
So today, I wanted to personally reach out and share a few of the steps we are taking for you, our customer:
Before you fly
To give you the greatest flexibility, when you book any flight with us now through March 31, you can change it for free over the next 12 months – any ticket, any fare type, any destination.
On the ground
Our team of in-house medical experts and industrial hygienists oversee our aircraft cleaning procedures to ensure they meet or exceed all CDC guidelines. Hard surfaces such as lavatories, tray tables, window shades and armrests are thoroughly wiped down with a high-grade disinfectant and multi-purpose cleaner. And when we are advised by the CDC of a person who has traveled on board and is potentially exhibiting coronavirus symptoms, that aircraft is taken out of service and sent through a full decontamination process that includes our standard cleaning procedures plus washing ceilings and overhead bins and scrubbing the interior.
In the air
Our aircraft are equipped with state-of-the-art circulation systems, similar to those found in hospitals, which use a high-efficiency (HEPA) filter to circulate the air and remove more than 99% of airborne particles. We're also adjusting our inflight service to limit person-to-person contamination. This includes handing beverages directly to customers instead of allowing customers to touch a tray and ensuring all flight attendants wear gloves during service.
More information on each of these efforts can be found on the United Hub.
I know I speak for every member of our United family when I say that we take the greatest pride in the role we play in the lives of our customers, personally and professionally.
I want you to know that you can continue to rely on us. So, the next time we have the privilege of welcoming you aboard our aircraft, you can know our commitment to you remains as steadfast as ever.
Kind regards,
Oscar

I agree Scruffy. Not every patient should be admitted. We don’t have the resources for that. I think South Korea is being too aggressive in that regard.

Wall Street is paying too much attention to the media and are falling for the hype. They're also taking advantage of the crisis to earn a quick buck.

Sorry on mobile but this twitter string is depressing. It’s obviously worst case scenario but she’s dead serious. Curious what thoughts are about her statements?
That is also assuming a static system. If it gets that bad you will see temporary facilities put into service. Maybe tents, empty commercial properties, etc.

I just can't see it getting that bad either. Even with the differences between the government, I can't see us having like 50x as many cases as China.

That will help. Keep in mind that you need providers to run those facilities. Italy is already calling doctors out of retirement. Also, providers become infected themselves and cannot work.
Hopefully though things like public awareness, weather changing, mutations, etc. will slow the rate of transmission enough that we don’t see any Wuhan type scenarios. I’m hoping we see that in Italy and SK.

I’m not going to take the opinion of people who think there’s 236467442 genders seriously.

Some of her math is actually correct, but being an engineer there are a lot of factors she doesn’t account for.

Alitalia airlines told me this morning they aren’t refunding plane tickets but are monitoring the situation in Italy and to check back at a later date to see if things change.
Posted on 3/7/20 at 10:13 am to WaWaWeeWa
Sure. I get she’s looking at pure numbers but the first thing I thought of when reading this was Italy. They went 0 to 100 in 2 weeks and we are over here not even asking damn questions or screening at airports. It’s like someone else said...we’ve passed containment if spread is what we really think it may be at this point.

People don't realize how heavily populated s Korea China is. A virus can do some serious damage. The USA is pretty spread apart compared to these other countries

That’s a funny email from United. I’ve been on their planes where their tray tables are dirty as frick.

Exactly, that was my point. There are a lot of factors that can reduce the spread. The speed of transmission isn’t a static number, it changes continuously. It can change as the public changes their habits, weather warms, and more people become infected reducing the amount of possible new patients.
People in Wuhan were caught totally off guard. We have more knowledge about the virus now, let’s see if that helps.

I hear you. Just passing along what I received. I fly on United fairly often as they're direct to the places I need to get to.

Is Louisiana testing yet?
My girlfriend has had a TERRIBLE upper respiratory “cold” for a week and half now. Been to doctor twice, meds aren’t working.
Now I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have coronavirus but I definitely see how this stuff spreads. Let’s pretend for a minute she does have it. She wasn’t tested either time at doctor, and she hasn’t missed any classes at LSU Which means she would
Have exposed thousands of people without knowing she had it.
