frick.....
Then who’s sending me the nudes
And should I not have sent them the n95 masks they asked for?
Serious though, someone told me their friend fell for this scam. Someone wired them money to go buy n95 masks from the US and ship to SZ. Well after they were shipped, the person disappears and now that person is out thousands. New version of the Nigerian money scam.

Given that most of those are produced over there anyway, it sounds awfully like jewelry polka even if it was legit.

I still like the amazon at home test kits. Jeff Bezos could buy everyone a test kit and drop it off on their porch and still have more money than most small nations. If you get a fever, test yourself then quarantine yourself. Make it happen Bezos.
The risk might be the number of false positives that lead to people panicking when they don't have the virus. Not sure what the false positive rate is, but if it is 0.1% that would still lead to a lot of false positives across the general population.
I think there is a middle ground, but I do think we need to get our act together. The US response overall has been pretty poor to date.

See my previous post about an Israeli company saying they should have a working vaccine in the next couple of weeks. How fast it is tested for safety/testing would be the holdup.

Is everyone still freaking out in this thread or have cooler heads arrived???

Same cooler heads that have been here, thank you very much.

I truly wonder how many of the people spreading calm will be standing in line at Costco this weekend with two full carts?

Yet one page back
Some women I went to church with were comparing how much food and ammo they have ready to go when the virus spreads through Texas. Months worth already stored
Another lady my wife works with has purchased masks for everyone in the office.

What makes the US immune to what Italy is going through?
11% of known cases in Italy have resulted in intensive care or death.
50,000 Italians in 12 towns are under quarantine. They can’t leave their zone or else they face fines/imprisonment.
I’m not saying you should go in your bunker and lock the door, but there is plenty of reason for a least moderate concern over what impact this will have in the US, plenty of reason to stay tuned in and make preparations as the virus is almost certainly going to reach all of our areas.

I’ll ask you to note the DVs on that post however

That would not be as hypocritical as you think it is.

But they’ve been sold out for weeks now. So I guess the scam was to reach out to those in the US where there would still be inventory and get them to ship some for resale.

Nothing, but "11%" is useless.
When you talk about it in raw numbers - there are 17 dead and 19 in critical condition - it doesn't sound anywhere near as daunting.

LOL, I was just looking that up to post.
Really not scary at all

It might not be indicative of what will happen in the US, but it’s backed by real numbers and a somewhat significant sample size.

I’d say those raw numbers at this early stage are much less meaningful than the death/intensive care rate. Those raw numbers would mean more if it wasn’t as contagious as it is, but since it is as contagious or more contagious than the flu and it’s just a matter of time before it becomes widespread, the rates are what really matter. Corona is significantly more dangerous than flu.

Here’s your internet cool points for telling everyone how not scared you are.

How hard is it for some of you to picture what would happen in the future when the graph looks like this...
I’m starting to think it’s some kind of coping mechanism to “look at the raw numbers”. But I guess everyone’s different.

Another death on the cruise ship

A British man who was onboard the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan has died from the coronavirus, Kyodo News reports. The first foreign passenger to die, his death brings the toll among passengers from the vessel to six, according to Kyodo.

SG is practically back to normal, people going about their lives as normal. Shopping at grocery and the likes, aside from some mask wearers.
SG & Japan are probably good examples of what might happen in the US. Spread of the virus slowed by mitigation efforts in areas that see clusters of infections - school closures, cancel public gathers, etc. The virus will continue to spread but won't overwhelm the healthcare system.
On the flip side, Iran is probably an example of what we are going to see in less developed nations. Faster spread of the virus, already sub par healthcare systems quickly overwhelmed, much higher CFR, etc.
It is likely that SARS-CoV-2 joins the ranks of the other endemic human coronaviruses. The question then is what does that look like in 1 yr, 5 yrs, 10 yrs?

As the novel coronavirus starts to gather speed in Europe, the Middle East and the U.S., there’s one place it is seemingly being contained: Singapore.
With no reported virus-related deaths despite 98 cases, and a slowing rate of infection that’s been outpaced by recoveries, the Asian city-state is emerging as a litmus test of whether the deadly pathogen can be, if not contained, then neutralized.
