With the cases in South Korea, Japan, and other countries not named China, we should get a better idea on how this affects different people.

Someone please post the names of the cities. Kinda hard to get news here. No twitter and most news sites wont load. Currently in my wife's hometown outside of Yichang. Was supposed to stay through the end of the month but are trying to move our flights up.. no luck so far

Damn, looks like Honkus is in lockdown mode. Yichang, where Honkus is, looks to be the 14th city with imposed travel restrictions:

Good luck bro. Update if you can.

I felt like SARS was more localized and less spread over the world, maybe not. That was some time ago.

Only the CDC can run the diagnostic tests to confirm this new strain of coronavirus.

Freaking red tape. They should getting that ability out to all major cities.

Has nothing to do with red tape.

It’s that it is a brand new virus and the testing machines at hospitals simply cannot detect this strain at this time.

CDC has developed a real time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRT-PCR) test that can diagnose 2019-nCoV. Currently, testing for this virus must take place at CDC, but in the coming days and weeks, CDC will share these tests with domestic and international partners through the agency’s International Reagent Resource

It probably takes some time to get it together and make it work in the format needed to share it widely.

It isn’t that simple.

The test they are using isn’t a quick one like the rapid flu test.

They haven’t created a quick test yet, and most hospitals, besides the large institutions, actually send a lot of the less common tests to other facilities.

Many of the large institutions do that as well.

But, the issue is that the test for this virus is new and likely time-consuming, and institutions outside of the CDC are not equipped to run it.

I know our RPP (respiratory pathogen panel for the non medical folks) only detects 4 of the most common strains coronavirus.

I’ve already seen a hysterical mom on the local news here freaking out cause her kid tested positive for coronavirus at one of the other hospitals.

Not realizing it’s not THAT coronavirus

Per Internet -

The first suspected cases were notified to WHO on 31 December 2019,[4] with the first instances of symptomatic illness appearing just over three weeks earlier on 8 December 2019

I would say that is still brand new in the sense that hospital labs aren’t able to just magically have their lab equip test for these strains of viruses they have never seen before.

Read somewhere that China may be shutting down internet nationwide, if they haven’t already.

Already down since yesterday, nothing coming out even from the government. Twitter, FB, Insta all were showing way more death and sickness than being reported so we know what every China says multiply 10 fold. We will probably have to act on last known information and start small quarantine areas around American confirmed cases and those that came in contact within the last 20 days. And suspected cases treat as positive and do the same until we can get a handle. Plastic beaker time
