I bring up the seasonal flu, which is a virus and far more of a risk to you and I than this novel coronavirus

So they’ve said the mortality rate is less than 0.1% and its not as contagious as the flu and/or the virus has been contained?

Japanese has five cases:
quote:

Later on Thursday, a Chinese man in his 50s, who had previously stayed in Wuhan, was found be infected in the western prefecture of Mie, Kyodo news agency reported.

A Chinese woman in her 20s, who had previously stayed in Wuhan and was studying in Kyoto, was also found to be infected, broadcaster NHK said.

And three among the evacuees from Wuhan, two of whom were asymptomatic.

quote:

The three cases were among 206 Japanese people who were evacuated to Tokyo on Wednesday from the Chinese city of Wuhan, ..... The two people who were confirmed as infected but had not shown symptoms were the first such cases in Japan, though suspicion has been rising elsewhere that people who have the virus but no symptoms can infect others.

Flu R value fluctuates between 1.3 - 2.0 with a mortality rate below 0.1%. By all indications, this new virus is worse. The flu infected nearly 36 million people in the US last yr. Let's pray we don't see this virus become established like the flu.

Nothing wrong with praying it doesn't infect anywhere close to as many people as the seasonal flu, I'm just pointing out the clear difference in risk to an average American.

How disappointed are you going to be when no one dies in the US? Serious question.

Oh

My

God

128 cases across the entire world not named China.

0 deaths.

0/128 = mortality rate of 0% if you're not in China. The common cold is more deadly.

2% Mortality rate

Let's stop using this statistic.

It doesnt make any sense. It doesnt make sense to use everyone who is sick as the denominator. That mortality rate is the floor.

Think about it. If the virus stopped spreading right now, the denominator would stay the same. But more people are definitely going to die. So its at least 2%.

that's as fair as using the total died + total recovered as the denominator and saying the mortality rate is over 50%. it's too early, you need to give it some time to see who recovers and who dies.

Asymptomatic positive tests are good news.

Even if the virus spreads while you're asymptomatic, being able to find out you have it before you feel like you have it is a good thing.
