Didn’t know where to ask this, but this thread seemed like a good spot.

Did I read correctly that Miami OH cancelled their basketball games because of the virus? Why did they do that?

Substantial economic losses

You can’t be serious

You should run an estimate of the losses that would occur if even a minor outbreak happened in the US.

I guess we're lucky you're not a global leader, then.

Kneejerk reactions with enormous economic consequences. Wouldn't you prefer calm, rational decision-makers?

You think it's easy to convince a billion people who are poor as shite to start doing things that cost them more money?

This virus + SARS + MERS combined will kill less than the flu this year, so I'll ask again, how are you coping?

I’m going to walk away from this conversation for the simple fact that you have already made your mind up and can’t even acknowledge that you don’t have the facts to make a statement like this

Speaking with such authority based on preliminary numbers out of China is not only irresponsible it makes you look extremely ignorant

I bought some MREs, but that's just because I'm rotating my hurricane supplies.

You have to multiply those estimated losses by the difference in probability of an outbreak occurring by shutting down flights out of China vs. not doing so. There might be 100% chance either way, or 0% chance either way.

You are trading guaranteed losses for unknown savings of another unknown.

Do you not realize how irresponsible your suggestion is based on those same preliminary numbers?

China's lieing, there are thousands dead and hundreds of thousands infected. These people have traveled the world and no one is restricting them. There must be thousands infected and hundreds dead across the world too...

Oh, wait. 88 cases. No deaths. The rest of the world lieing too?

Simple question. If you could stop the flu from ever getting here next year would you stop flights from China to do it?

In this made up world where this could actually happen? Maybe.

It's simply not practical here on this world. Not even remotely practical.

This raises many questions, and the answers could be terrifying at worst and very interesting at best.

First report of the wuhan coronavirus in UAE confirmed about 20-30 mins ago.

Family traveling back from Wuhan area confirmed. Stable and in observation.
