Well for starters, its Addis Police. Then add the fact that he was a reserve....
Highly doubt he was well trained or had "many hours" of firearm training.
Either way, this was preventable

I would love to see his training records. Probably laughable

What's the percentage. Of accidental discharges of firearms that go off while "cleaning" them that hit people?
I bet its pretty high.
I will never buy the "accidental" shooting while cleaning a gun excuse. Never.

Remember this from last year... Police Chief shoots wife wile asleep

The police chief in an upscale community outside Atlanta said he was sleeping when he moved a gun in the bed and accidentally shot his wife in the back, according to a 911 tape released Friday.

yeah I don't believe the "accident" story.

If it was an accident that is truly scary how little training this man had with a weapon. How do you not unload your guy before you start cleaning it?!?

The first action you take to disassemble a glock is to pull the trigger so you can remove the slide. It's sad because, assuming it was an accident, he violated two basic safety rules: he failed to check if his gun was loaded and failed to point it away from anything important until he verified it was unloaded. There are many accidental discharges that happen before people start cleaning their guns because they don't confirm its not loaded (but you rarely hear of them because random holes though walls or roofs rarely make the news), but it's sad when those accidents occur when the gun happens to be pointed at someone. Whether that failure rises to the level of criminal negligence can be discussed, but it's not such an uncommon occurrence that we should assume malicious intent every time it happens.

My dad "accidentally discharged" his .38 while cleaning when I was younger. It also just so happened to be at a moment when my mom, who had just filed for divorce, was around and in the direction of the bullets path

"The first action you take to disassemble a glock is to pull the trigger so you can remove the slide."
No that is not the first action you take.
From Glock
STEP 1
REMOVE THE MAGAZINE AND CLEAR CHAMBER. DO THIS BY LOCKING BACK THE SLIDE. BE SURE THERE IS NOT A ROUND IN THE CHAMBER BY VISUAL AND PHYSICAL INSPECTION. RELEASE THE SLIDE AND POINT THE PISTOL IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
No that is not the first action you take.

Far be it from me to start a semantics argument over when unloading ends and disassembling begins, but I think we can assume he means that the first step in removing the slide from an unloaded Glock is to pull the trigger.

That's why I rack my slide about a half dozen times after removing the mag. I don't wannna be the moron that everyone in my department talks about after blowing my finger off while cleaning my Glock.

Exactly. I find it very difficult to believe a trained LEO didn't know that. That's basic gun safety.

Huh, the state police investigated. They didn't investigate themselves.

Yeah because we should have NOT COPS investigating shootings? I think AC Repair guys would be a good group to take over these types of investigations.

Right. It doesn't take hours of special training. The very first thing my dad taught me as a young kid is assume every gun is loaded and has a round in the chamber.

Yep, I remember that. I don't buy that story either. He ought to be in a jail cell next to OJ, IMO.

That's just silly.
Pull your slide back....lock it to the rear.....visually and manually check the barrel/chamber for a round....and your good.
That is the correct way.

Please tell me you don't seriously believe this.
As for this cop, this was no "accident". But as usual, cops will look out for their own and he will walk. Hell, look at what just happened in Colorado where a cop shot an killed an unarmed man at a bike show in front of dozens of witnesses and walked.

a law officer that has hours upon hours of firearms training,
Ask me how I know you're an idiot.
Common sense is to unload a firearm before cleaning.
After reassembly, you typically cycle it a few times to make sure it is working correctly. And that is when UIDs happen. It is extremely common for people to reinsert the mag and then do this step.
I will not clean a firearm eith ammunition in the same area because of this.
