Usually your first shot is your most controlled. If that first shot didn't work, you are usually going to be firing multiple times quickly.

Most cops prefer buckshot. I will say this though, at that range buckshot IS a "slug" for all practical purposes.
I've never carried buckshot, slug only. The majority of guys I know carry slugs. Don't know very many that actually carry buckshot.
