Why wouldn’t you pay the guy if the work was satisfactory?

Sure the guy could have a lousy bookkeeper and didn’t invoice you promptly, but if things went well why not cut him a check?

I see no reason to try and beat him out his check.

Contractors do a lot of work. Just because accounting messed up with your bill, doesn't mean you don't have to pay. You should have called and reminded them. Yes, you still owe them money. Yes, you should pay it. Don't be a bum.

You’re fixing to have a judgement placed on your credit history if you don’t pay them on the finished work. Did you sign off on the work?

Can you PLEASE tell us what kind of work the contractor performed and how much the invoice was? I'm really curious now, as are others.

OP should pay, but that's laughable. Contractor is responsible for this mess, not OP.

Everybody that's been in business has done this at one time or another.

We do it to exactly avoid situations just like this.

Legally, no you don’t have to pay if a full year has actually gone by

We had something similar happen. The guy disappeared off the face of the earth and showed up about a year later and he wanted to add changes that were never written up or signed. I paid him the original balance and told him to pound sand on the "change orders". No documentation, no check.

ETA: The change orders were questionable at best which is why we did not include them in the final payment.

Something small like this is usually upon completion but most contractor work is net 30 at on average unless contracts state differently or if you work for the Corps of Engineer then it's net 90 IIRC.

Right but that's when it is due if invoiced and is not statutory. I was responding to what I read as the thought there is some outer limit on which you could bill and there usually isnt (not super family LA law) aside from the statutory limitations on being contract claims which are usually longer than what we have here.

You're going to have to provide more than your word on that one. No, a lien can't be filed but the contractor still has every right to be paid for satisfactory work.

Sorry I didn't know the exact timetable, I'm not a contractor or lawyer.

I do know that liens are a thing, and the OP could still be sued in, I guess, small claims court (depending on amont)

Why not avoid all that?

Next you're gonna be telling me I can't rely on this board for legal or medical advice.

You’ll eventually have to pay it, you can make it difficult for both of you or just write a check

This one is easy, take 1.5 years to pay if you don’t have the cash right now.

Tell the contractor you will pay him in 18 months.
