True but now it’s finally being enforced. Said if they catch them at the border they are back in their country within 3 days, no more hearings or holding

Or The Construction Management is paying workers very low so they get to keep massive cuts, now they will have to employ legals and pay more, the market price of jobs might not change, but simply cut what management takes home at the end of they day much lower. Instead of them keeping 80 and giving employees 20, it may now be 60/40. With the same price per job.

Maybe, but probably not. Some cost increase is going to get passed to customers. Maybe all of it, maybe some of it. But something will. Especially when you figure out that it's not just wages, it's taxes, benefits, workman's comp, etc. It'll add up and erode the margins and when you throw in a little collusion thats how you have a recipe for higher prices.

It needs to happen, but its probably going to suck. Especially when a storm hits and there's a labor shortage.

Some of y'all obviously haven’t been around construction last 20 years.

Say it over and over. This will hurt the US economy in ways you can’t imagine. Pretend otherwise if you want to.

Literally the only people that can and want to do this work (along with chicken processing).

Gringos and black folks haven’t been skilled at this labor since 90’s (or wanted to do it).

My mom lives in a very rural area, white meth heads still do the roofing. It took them a week to roof a simple 1500 sf ranch house, and they did a terrible job. A Hispanic crew did mine 3000 sf should with many peaks and valleys in one day and did a great job.

Good luck finding very many Americans who will stay on a 120 degree roof in MS/LA in August.

Like it isn’t already hurting this country already? Take your blindfold off.

There’s plenty here that are legal. Oh and FYI- illegals take half a trillion dollars in entitlements per year. Not anymore though.

I guess they will have to hire legal workers

Go find the US citizen who wants pour concrete and be a mason tender. Starting pay is roughly $45,000-$55,000 depending on your market in the southeast for an 18 year old with no degree. Within 5-7 years you can work your way up to a foreman and earn $125,000-$150,000 if you’re good at it. There is no one who wants to do this work. I spend a few days each month going to career centers and high schools talking to kids about the opportunities available to them in the masonry industry. Between all the reputable masonry companies in this area, we’re lucky to get 8 kids enter the industry; 1 or 2 of them might still be in it within 2 years. We are dependent on foreign labor because no one wants to take these open positions. We’re a country of lazy motherfrickers.

You did this to yourself and got greedy off of an endless supply of cheap labor. Forty years ago that wasn’t the case and many construction trades have made it nearly impossible to hire non immigrant labor with the wages they are only willing to pay

A lot of naive people in here.

I had 2 Mexicans work for me for 10 years painting, doing carpentry, etc.

I paid each one $25/hr cash.

I can’t find ANY non Spanish workers to replace them. Forget the money, the gringos in construction are crackheads who don’t show up.

If my costs go up in residential building, prepare to see a bunch of $300/ft houses being built in south Louisiana. You think Real Estate prices are high now? Just wait.

*for the record, I think it’s worth it to flush the country of illegals, but it’s going to have a massive impact on residential construction specifically.

Anyone saying, “just hire Americans” is obviously not in construction.

This isn’t just affecting the residential market. The commercial market is getting hit also, including multi-family / apartments. There are 3 new apartment job sites between LC and Lafayette that lost many of their framer/laborer crews. I currently have 11 local multi-fam’s in my project list currently under construction, with 6 to start in next quarter.. Major GC’s claim to hire only legals but do they? There is only so much trade labor and a large percentage of that is illegal. Simple math says new builds and all projects slow down. How slow will depend on the money of course.. This purge needs to happen but sucks for new construction, legit folks that earn a living in the industry, and ultimately the economy. The upside is maybe we can get all the unemployed, welfare drawing, homeless legals to get off their arse and work for a living (could not stop laughing while typing).

that's what it is in Louisiana. Every poor podunk town sheriff wants his piece of the pie by having a poorly run corrupt work release that does no good for the community, the local businesses, or the incarcerated that would benefit from learning a trade.

Would need a major overhaul, but low skilled young convicts is something that Louisiana has a plethora of that can and should be tapped

Someone on the contractor board in Louisiana owns sober living facilities and is good friends with a local judge. I will let you take a wild guess where he gets a lot of his labor force from for his construction company because they have no choice but to work for him.
