Do it. You can make good money as an A&P avionics technician. Especially in avionics. The Air Force is a great way to get experience and background. School will come easy after that.

You just got your job like a week ago. Give it a chance. You were lucky to get the job that you have.

Terd, I didn't ask to go to a carrier. More of a voluntold for career path. It was either this or China Lake, CA... Which would have been a follow-on carrier tour. Still wear my silver dolphins though

Considering USAF, any suggestions

Yeah, don't.

The USAF is about to get a strong course correction under Trump.
- They are responsible for virtually all of our major acquisitions that under-deliver and over-promise
- USAF projects are notorious for predictable delays and massive budgets that never seem to be enough; even worse, because they have been allowed to get away with this for so long, it's started rubbing off on the other branches; look at the biggest projects and how they get spread over many congressional districts, and so forth; so expect Trump to make an example of the USAF
- USAF is very bloated on the top end and it's likely severe cuts to their GO numbers are coming, likewise that will effect the top of the enlisted ranks too; you are likely to see it get way more difficult to get promoted in the USAF soon
- There are influential voices right now that want close air support, and the A-10 surrendered to the Army / Marine Corps. If that happens, that will dramatically re-shape the USAF and they may be forced to contract while Trump probably expands all other branches
- The F35 is a disaster and is nothing more than a scheme to launder money and commit fraud; track the contractors, generals, and big names parroting the F35 narrative, along with tech starts to build widgets that go on the aircraft that get nested into the program and you'll see this
- F35 may get cancelled or scaled back and this will also affect USAF personnel numbers
- Trump is not big on NATO, for good reasons; and the F35 junkies have been peddling the F35 to NATO for quite some time; again another indicator things will likely change when Trump takes office
- Under Obama the Navy has contracted quite a bit. Right now it is more important for the US to maintain control of sea lanes than throw 2 trillion at a failed jet; Trump is going to expand the Navy
- This is reinforced by the fact that if the US forms a working relationship with Russia and if Trump rescinds Obama's moronic order to make the ocean off limits to drilling, the US and Russia could go into the Arctic and other areas and extract so much oil that energy independence will arrive by 2020; and this will be more dependent on sea lanes than a failed fighter
- It will be more important to exert strong naval presence in dealing with China than developing a failed fighter jet
- Trump will offset some of the cost to bolster the Navy with reductions in the USAF; and my guess he will offer the USAF a carrot of increasing their F22 numbers, which is another disaster of a program but it did end up producing a good jet; but overall the USAF could be taking a big hit soon
- Finally, consequences of Russia / US partnerships have to be entertained; it's rumored Russia has radar that defeats our stealth now, which is very reasonable; after all it was their work we stole in order to create stealth to begin with; a close relationship with them may get them to offer up some of their new capabilities; if they include radar that mitigates our stealth then you can say goodbye to the F35 entirely and the F18 will become the dominant aircraft in our inventory and the F22 will be mostly held back in case it's needed in order to preserve its numbers; overall this would make conflict much less likely but still place importance on a strong Navy; however, because the ME is such a disaster, strong ground forces will still be a priority
- USAF is trending down, Navy is trending up right now

Conclusion - go see Navy about engineering / nuke programs and at the first sign of Trump saying he's going to boost the Navy, find out what special programs are coming down and get in the door with those immediately.

If you have an engineering degree, don't enlist, get commissioned. Avionics is not for you, and you won't get pay commensurate to your education level.

With that said, I work the "heavies". Long hours and low morale. Nothing like being in the trenches, but aircraft maintenance is not a great place to be as far as jobs go. They get treated like arse and slaved out to make over-ambitious flight hour programs successful.

You can definitely get good government contractor jobs after you have experience in the military, but it isn't worth it compared to commissioning when you already have an engineering degree.

Besides, you can get into acquisitions/test and evaluation and mess with avionics all day long going the officer route.

I joined the Air Force from a small BFE town in Missouri, grew up with only my mom and she worked a factory/waitress jobs so we didn't have a shite ton of money.

Went to community college out of high school, but didn't really care for it. Our town was something you ended up in a small construction or factory job, or a druggy. Decided to join the military and picked Air Force

Wanted to be a cop, they made me medical instead, it seems like cop is the catch all for the military though as if people failed out elsewhere they get re classed as that often. Good and bad with losing out on that I guess.

First assignment, North Carolina, had a lot of fun, single with a decent income living on my own, able to buy a nice little car, deployed twice got in great shape having a good time.

Then sent to Hawaii, got to live 3 years there, paid a shite ton to live in paradise, a place a kid like me from middle of nowhere Missouri would have been hard pressed to see in my life. Got to bring my family to visit, something they wouldn't have done. Got married there, both military, wife and I bringing in 150k a lot of that tax free.

Virginia now, fun little assignment, 2 years later and we are about to move to California, and were almost headed back to Hawaii, but were bumped for an exceptional needs family.

The military has given me a lot, and it's a headache sometimes, but I have gotten to see more and do more than I ever would have otherwise

Somebody should tell him that you can't just quit if you decide you don't like it after a month or two.

He'd owe the military money every month if his pay were commensurate to his education level.

My neighbor has been in the air force since college and he's about 50 now. They pretty much just asked him out of the blue one day if he wanted to fly drones. That sounds kick arse in my opinion.
