They can’t even build an efficient regional joint transit bus system between Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany, and St. Bernard parishes.

Kind of hard when JP and St Tammany don’t want it

St. Bernard might, we have an RTA bus now

The streetcar system could be upgraded to modern trams that are much faster and practical, but the populace values the charm of the old cars.

There’s so many pedestrians and road crossings that I don’t think a faster system is practical in NOLA

the mental gymnastics in this thread are borderline legendary

I learned from the experts from whom I referenced.

We have a party that is blowing a gasket about cutting fraud out of social programs by claiming it will kill the poor.

They walk out of that meeting to another to brag on how they have received hundreds of millions from the working class for simply driving into the city.

You mean it cleared up the roads for those who can afford it. Screw the poors who have to take extra or less safe steps to get to work.

Have you ever spent any time in NYC? What poors are driving into the City for work?

What about all the people that can't afford it, greatly inconvenienced by this? They take mass transit.

It’s a complete shock to many who have never lived in ultra congested cities but poors rarely own cars in cities like NYC. The Subway and bus system are light years better than any mass transit system in any Southern city

The reason no one is saying it is that it's not true. I would guess that everyone complaining about the effect on "poor people" and "longer commutes" have never been to NYC aside from perhaps Times Square with all the other tourists and have no idea how the city works. The subway is actually a LOT faster than driving in traffic. I live in Clinton Hill Brooklyn right across the river from Manhattan. I can be in the Lower East Side right now in 15-20 minutes on the subway but it would take me around 40 minutes to drive if lucky and then I'd be doubly lucky to not spend more than that finding a parking spot. "Poor people": 1) If any "poor person" drives to a job in Manhattan they circle in traffic for at least an hour to find metered parking and pay $40-50 during work while constantly taking work breaks to feed the meter. Or, pay $80-100 for a parking garage. If many were doing this and now the extra $12 changes their mind, it will probably really help them to save over an hour a day and a lot of money by taking the train. Not to mention that anyone choosing to circle for an hour to park is causing far more than their share of the congestion. 2) "Poor people" with a car that live in the zones don't pay. 3) "Poor people" with a business vehicle don't pay. This is not about commuting to work. What are precise examples of all these "poor people" who have been driving to Manhattan that now can't due to the $12 during the work day?

Another thread where a bunch of dudes in Central and Bogalusa spout off about something they know absolutely nothing about.

Grew up on Long Island. I don’t know why anyone would want to drive into the city for work. Trains go to all suburban points and take far less time/money per month

the best part is these same people just KNEW this was going to be a disaster. Now that it’s working (not a surprise because this isn’t in any way a new idea), brains are exploding

“But what about the poor!!!!!”

I had a guy scoff and try to argue with me when I said the subway system in NYC was pretty great. They're idiots who think a yearly trip to Destin makes them a cultured traveler.

Is this one of those scenarios where we have to wait a couple of weeks to find out the real numbers?

It's super great when there are fires in the tunnel every day for weeks. It's super great when you're headed back to the Bronx and they take everybody off and give them bus transfers in Harlem. It's super great when they reverse all the improvement that Giuliani made and now the trains are homeless encampments again.

No, our problem isn't that certain places have serviceable mass transit systems (and to remove the snark, NYC has a great system - when everything goes right and someone like Giuliani or Bloomberg is in charge). It's that Yankees want to impose that on the rural areas in the South and West. It won't work. It can't work because of population density (and other factors). Deal with it.

Admittedly, I don't ride the subway every day. But I have close friends that commute in and out of the city daily. I've yet to hear of a single time taht any of the above has happened to them.

Sorta wish they’d do it here. Keep the folks off of the road in rush hours who don’t really need to be out at that time.

The chance you have notable delay on the subway is about 1 in 20 times.

The chance you have notable delay driving a car is about 19 in 20 times.

Yet, another reason no one wants to drive a car to work.

However, FOX news has my uncle who lives in Brewton, Alabama and once visited NYC in 1967 fully convinced that the subway is a Zombie death labyrinth.
