From /r/dataisbeautiful

Average US unemployment rate is 3.5%. Average EU unemployment rate is 6.1%.

I decided to look up the UK for comparison, and their average unemployment rate is 3.7%.

Of course, most of the redditor comments are “bUt tHAts dIfFEreNt!”

The politicians changed the way the US calculates unemployment to make it look good.

It took out the lazy bums who aren’t even trying to find a job right? If you aren’t looking for work you shouldn’t be on the governments payroll. Idc how damn dyslexic you are

Spain and Greece are full of young people who don't work.

Wtf Spain

Back when the PIIGS were about to implode I think their unemployment rate was like 25%

I just looked it up and their youth unemployment rate is almost 35%

Europe has a ton of bad economies that are protecting older workers. I think the only reason Italy's is so low is b/c of how bad COVID was there.

Southern Europeans have a reputation for making industry and production a low priority in their daily lives.

The US calculates it on working age people actively searching for a job,,,however the percentage of working age people actually employed is less than 50%. I can’t provide a source, that intel was given at a presentation a few months ago by an economist at a conference I attended.

Changing qualifications for social security disability benefits also has an impact.

I have community members getting SS checks for covid brain. Fybromyalgia. And other invisible ailments.

Correct which doesnt show real unemployment.

Real unemployment is most likely over 50% in the native villages, but the official stats look much lower. Its because most of the people there don't look for, nor want to work.

I can't fathom not wanting to work if you're able to. I don't get people who don't have any drive to succeed and make something of their own.

When did this happen?

It’s happened more than once in at least the past 30 years.

The government has also meddled with the inflation formula to make that number look better than it is. They’ve removed things that actually hit people like food costs.

More recently, the definition of the word “vaccine” was changed so the COVID mRNA shots would be included in the definition.
