Sounds like he should have taken the in house gig to me
She got a sweet arse deal and a better schedule for them to have kids, and he made partner about a year later.

Today, I was in the car with someone he works with. He told me that they can't get married because they can't be married and in a position where one has to report to the other. One would be terminated.
Seems pretty stupid, since everyone already knows they live together and have a child together.
I would lay odds that the policy forbids any romantic relationship. Just being married doesn't allow for everyone to pretend it isn't going on.

Absolutely.

If you have a problem with one, you usually have to replace both.

Plus if they’re married it looks bad when management and subordinates are taking vacation at the same time and the rest of their department has to take up the slack of two at once. Happened in an old job I had. They actually started dating at the firm and got married shortly after. Long before I got there. But every June they’d take two weeks off and leave the other three in their group to do all the work. Wasn’t much that complaining would accomplish when one of them is the boss.

If my wife reported to me, I’d give a raise immediately. And increase it monthly.

Pretty common. In corporations
Used to be stronger
My brother and I (both engineers in oil business )could not work in the same district office we we got out of college
I ended up with different company
They do have a point and just trying to keep potential conflicts of interest minimized
I never had a problem with it

Contractors in my office have similar rules, but for a reason.
They previously had a married couple in one of their offices. When they started having issues, wifey decided to start dating another girl in the office and things got awkward.
They ended up pushing a rule through because of it that the significant others had to be in different units, which is how they got around sending an engaged couple from our site to another site.
TLDR - If they have this rule, it typically means someone fricked it up for everyone

I remember one of our VP having an affair with a coworker
We all knew about it and It made for some hard feelings come promotion time
Eventually the VP wife divorced him
I hope she took him to the cleaners
He was a dirt bag

Look up nepotism...

this used to be the norm almost everywhere, in fact it used to be very common, in addition to that, for companies to have a nepotism rule, in that a relative of a current employee would not be eligible for employment at the same company

No, they forbid having one partner being married to their supervisor or subordinate. It creates legal issues with favoritism and whatnot.
And it's fairly common in business.
But dating and shacking create the same conflict of interest.

You used to note be able to do those either with a coworker
Cause yeah same point ...possible conflict when emotional ties get involved in business relations

the most screwed up group I ever had to manage was 30 professionals that had 4 married couples. there are no private conversations, policies are written for family units with one employee, flexibility to move to follow the job is cut in half, most couples have a superior performer and one that needs development, vacation scheduling requires preferential treatment and the other 75 percent of employees want slack cut also

Thought this was common knowledge
At my firm if you’re dating someone within your division (Let’s day Listed derivatives), and they find out the one who’s more junior has to be moved different group
