Had dinner with a guy last night and he has a 1 y.o. kid by his girlfriend. They both have high profile management positions. They live together. I asked if he would ever contemplate getting married and he laughed it off.

Today, I was in the car with someone he works with. He told me that they can't get married because they can't be married and in a position where one has to report to the other. One would be terminated.

Seems pretty stupid, since everyone already knows they live together and have a child together. Is this even legal?

Yep. If you teach here in Kentucky and your SO works in the same building but is promoted to an administrative position (like Assistant Principal, Counselor, etc.) one has to transfer.

Single guys take note. This is how you avoid having to marry her.

Typically, couples have to report any relationship if one reports to the other.

They don't forbid marriage, they forbid working for the company while married. As a private company who's best interest is every team member working together as effectively as possible, it isn't totally unfair for them to have this kind of stipulation. Some couples could do it and some couples definitely could not.

thats because her or him always wants to start some shite and take it to corporate if one of them has issues.

its the most fricked up situation ever when a supervisor cant discipline or write up an employee without it turning into a fricking soap opera involving nearly everyone within that group

upper mgt doesn't want the hot chicks to marry. might lessen their willingness to "work" their way up the ladder.

This is pretty common in large companies.

No, they forbid having one partner being married to their supervisor or subordinate. It creates legal issues with favoritism and whatnot.

And it's fairly common in business.

pretty much standard operating procedure in corporate America. You think he is gonna demote his wife? You think he will be completely fair in doling out funds from the bonus pool that ultimately end up in their joint checking account?

You think he won’t fire that bitch Becky in accounting who fricked his wife’s high school boyfriend?

Law firms as well. I had 2 friends working at the same firm, and when they got engaged she had to take an in-house gig. She had just made partner so she would have been one of his superiors

I used to work for a publicly traded company that did this. Funny thing is, people were/are dating one another all around the company, but you can't be married and stay in the same division.

Our company used to have a policy like that until the CEO was having an affair with his secretary who he eventually married, then changed the policy.

That started a big inter office frickfest and was an amazing time.
