My GFs best friend just broke it off with her live in boyfriend. They are both in their mid forties and both previously married and divorced. They had both agreed to not marry but live together. He had bought her a very nice commitment ring. I would say about 10k. My GF and her both think she should keep the ring. I said F that and give it back as she broke up with him.

I told my GF I'd have the OT settle this. Sorry no pics of either. Butterface bad

If she doesn't give it back she should expect the house to be burnt to the fricking ground.

Id take it back and buy a boat which is what he should have done in the first place.

10k for a commitment ring.

He doesn't deserve it back. That's what he gets.

She should give it back. I'd be a little worried that your gf thinks she should keep it. You better be really sure before you take that dive.

If she broke it off she should give it back. If he broke it off she should get to keep it. Who ever broke the commitment loses. I think it's simple.

That's a strange thing to do at 40+ y/o. How long they were together and do they own a home together? Maybe treat it like community property?

frick it, the woman should keep it. If the guy is 40 and didn't learn his lesson from a previous marriage and divorce, losing a $10k commitment ring, whatever the frick that is, is what he deserves.

ETA: I see other posters have previously had the same sentiment. I mean holy shite, that is the definition of the stupid tax.

Ehh, the woman was probably marginally cheaper than the boat would have been over the same time frame

Engagement rings go back to the man if no marriage occurs. There have been court rulings on that.

Your GF agrees with her? That's a warning sign for you.

Why would she want to keep it?

I don't believe you. Your GF knows you post here so she monitors the OT. You just called her a butterface in a venue you knew she would see?

Your GF's friend did not get a $10k ring by being a butterface. She can also make a damned good sammich and knows how to use her head.

My first engagement was broken off, she had about 7 grand on her finger and I bought her earrings for around 2k. I let her keep the earrings, but the ring came home with me.
