It was either this board or the Soccer Board, but, either way, here's some news that'll interest a few here:
quote:

A drug with the potential to “end the HIV pandemic” will launch in the US this week – as a new study reveals it could be sold for 1,000 times less than its possible price tag.

Lenacapavir, given as a twice-yearly injection, can prevent someone from being infected with HIV, according to clinical trial results.

The company has not yet made the price of the drug public, but it has been estimated reported that it is likely to be on par with current preventive medications at about $25,000 (£18,400) a year. As a treatment for people already living with HIV, it costs about $39,000 annually.
But wait, didn't I mention a $25 annual cost? Pure liberal speculation. All the company has to do is ignore a little thing like hundreds of millions spent in research and give away the patent to generics manufacturers.

quote:

It could, however, be made for only $25 (£18.40) a year – including a 30% profit margin – analysis from the University of Liverpool and others suggests.

(They) had calculated a generic price of $40 annually last year, but said the interest from generic manufacturers had warranted new analysis. This showed lenacapavir could be mass produced for $35 to $46 a year, if there was annual demand for 2m doses, falling to $25 at scaled up production of 5m to 10m doses each year.
Sorry. It doesn't look like this will come to fruition for a while. They are going to be able to charge as much as they can. If you are infected with the AIDS virus, and a dose of this can get rid of it? You'll spend the money to get it.

Subtle I don't have AIDS brag...

I just passed my first ever AIDS test last month.

I had my annual check up and the doctor asked me if I had AIDS. I said, "I don't think so..."

So he ordered the test.

I think they would have mentioned it to us at some point during one of my wife's 3 pregnacies.

If you're living the kind of lifestyle that you need a twice-yearly injection just to make sure you don't get aids, you need to rethink your life.

Obviously, there are some exceptions from that judgement such as certain healthcare roles that come into frequent contact with aids patients.

I don't get the regular AIDS test anymore. I get the roundabout AIDS test. I ask my friend Brian, "Do you know anybody who has AIDS?". He says, "No". I say, "Cool, because you know me."

How about we try and cure cancer/dementia or the ton of other diseases that aren't contracted by anyone's poor choices.

I've read a few things that lead me to believe that dementia and alzheimers are actually related to diabetes and cholesterol. I'm not a doctor and I don't read medical journals so I don't fully believe the articles I've read, but it does make for an interesting argument and correlation. Hopefully it means that actual progress is being made.
