Well part of nursing school is your clinicals where you are directly caring for patients under supervision of your instructor. So that is part of why you had to have all that checked out before you could even be accepted into the program.

Nurse, as I'm sure you know, the hospital you work for also, in addition to the school program, has had a background check run.

I just got my renewal for Texas license and new rule: I must go to any PD and get printed again and also must have my own background check run to turn in to Texas Med Board just to renew license. Another unnecessary step and cost since any future med based employer will still have to run a background along with my prints to verify it is me. And I couldn't have gotten licensed in the 1st place without the print/background.

Govt. at it's finest! Redundancy on top of redundancy to duplicate redundancy.

The pharmacy board wouldn't give him a license to become a pharmacists, seems pretty simple.

I hope that's the case, because the same argument used to deny the pharmacist's license is the same argument that's failed in the House, to deny them from going to college.

In essence, the opponents of the bill say: convicts are too dangerous to allow into college.

The pharmacy board says: convicts are too dangerous to allow a pharmacist's license.

Does the pharmacy board have a specific policy denying a license to someone convicted of a drug possession and/or distribution charge... and not a broad policy denying "those convicted of crimes?" Because if it doesn't... the passage of this bill may allow for challenges to the board's practices based on the same reasoning. As this bill shows, it only takes one kid to screw everything up.

That's why I am saying that when the bill reaches the Senate, it should be sent back to committee... and if it reaches the governor's desk, it should be vetoed until a more specific bill can be written. Punt this bill to next year, and make it better.

Personally I think they should still have it on the application, however, it should not determine if someone is actually accepted.

I am guessing that they probably make the applicant list every arrest/conviction he's ever had. That's pretty standard at least for medicine, law and engineering.

Because I'd rather not send my girls to a school where a violent offender is roaming the halls.

Call me crazy.

Hate to break it to you but they already do. Or she's just going to go to Tigerland and get blasted so what's the difference to you.

Agreed. The problem isn't having it on the application, it's admissions departments using it to reject an application out of hand.

It deserves consideration one way or another, just like every other part of the application.

I don't have a problem with this. There's worse things than someone getting educated post conviction.

Depends on the crime. The example cited here is one thing.

A convicted sexual predator? Shouldn't be allowed on a campus (and the school will get Title IX'ed for letting them in if they reoffend).
