College Applications question

Son will be a senior next year, has played varsity football and may be one of tge captains next year. Relative helping out with college app process is telling him to drop football practice to volunteer at a disabled children's camp to look good on college applications.
This seems absurd to me.
Thanks for the replies... I don't think this person comprehends how much actually goes into sports, dumb jock mindset. Not going to do football in college but he's put in too much just to miss out on senior year. He can volunteer around practice locally.

You don't need volunteer work to get into Nicholls

No school will give a frick about that.
Your relative is living in 1953.

Just lie and say he volunteered at a disabled children's camp, but still play football.

If he plans to go to LSU, none of that matters. With decent grades and a good ACT score he will be covered for the most part with TOPS. Out of state schools will give him more than in state schools.

There are many other opportunities to volunteer...find another and fulfill the obligation to his teammates.

Volunteer somewhere else that fits his schedule

He should skip college and be a plumber.

Your post indicates you don’t know much about college. If your son is a first generation student I’d suggest sending him to community college as it will be less distractions, a good introduction into college, and save money. I took that path as a non traditional after the military and I think it was better than jumping into a university and the path I’ll encourage my kids to go - community college to university.

Are you talking about dropping football practice off the application, or are you talking about him quitting football to volunteer at a camp?

It’s irrelevant. Play football and fill out an application. Seriously just do what the guy above , supersaint, said and lie about it if you’re so worried.

Great profession but he'd rather be a fireman. College may not be his thing.

Even more reason to go to a community college.

Where is your son looking to go to school?

It would be the same a quitting... missing weeks of summer practice makes you not fit for the team. It's essentially walking out. Makes no sense to me.

If he hasn’t done community service until his senior year then colleges will see right though that as superficial. Being committed to sports is fine. He should not give up one of the best times of his life, senior season of football as a captain, for anything. There is plenty of time to volunteer all spring, during summer and on weekends.

Captain of any competitive sports team is a major + for admissions.
The only way the other route would trump it is if he created some kind of self funding trust that helped the homeless with job training and mental heakth services.

He wants to go out of state to a small school. Grades are okay for that. He was 3 sports, going down to 2 now so he could load up on Advanced Placement classes.

I mean if he has extra time, sure whatever to help.
But stop football, your relative is a fricking idiot.

I would not quit the team for that, as long as he is still enjoying it.
