College admissions Scandal: is the system broken?

I think they are going to throw the book at Aunt Becky and her husband.
What will be enough to serve as a general deterrent to the rich and “well off” to discourage cheating on standardized tests, faking athletic experience, or even giving up guardianship of their kids on paper so they can consume scholarships/resources allocated for the poor?
How do you fix what appears to be a disturbing culture of corruption among some of America’s well off/wealthy?

Couple years should do it.

People have been paying for admissions since universities were first developed who cares. Now the fact the SAT/ACT or whomever is compromised is a bigger deal.

I would only throw rope at Aunt Becky

Hopefully it’s at least a few years.
Poor parents that lie about their address to get kids into better public schools often face stiffer penalties than Felicity Huffman. She saw the issues and accepted a goof deal. Her kid also knows that their mother doesn’t think they are bright enough to break 1300 on the SATs.
A lot of other high profile people didn’t. And they are probably going to get the book thrown at them.

This is how I feel.

I think it’s blown way out of proportion. Big doners get favors given back all the time since the beginning of time. It’s not hurting anyone.

20 years for the tax evasion part, that's criminal after all.
The rest of the actual college admissions stuff? That's up to the States individually since they are State Schools and not National.
To control/avoid the adoption thing you mention, require records going back 5-10 years.
Faking Athletic Qualifications could be prosecuted under Fraud possibly (umbrella of Fraud: theft by, etc.).
Might be able to squeeze in a standardized test cheating Federal Law since it is used among the States (Commerce Clause).
Corrupt culture? That would be more involved and affect national/worldwide idol worship including advertising so you're talking hitting the back pockets of investors worldwide. Good Luck!

Lori Loughlin paid $500K so her daughters could “score” about 100 points lower on the SAT than my wife legitimately scored when she was in high school.
Why don’t people like Loughlin use her privilege and wealth on private teachers and help her kids legitimately build their confidence and test scores?

It's important to remember that we're talking about a pretty small subset of college applicants and universities so far. I wouldn't say the system is totally broken. A few bad actors figured out a loophole, at least based on what we know at this point.
FWIW, I don't consider the super wealthy making big donations to ensure admission to be nearly the same. Other students benefit from that behavior.

Lori got her kids into USC a private school right? I honestly don’t understand how this is a crime? Kicked out of USC for getting in with preference under some random sport the kid didn’t play? Sure let’s kick the kid out for an honor code violation or something.
Now tax evasion or something else sure lock them up. Donating extra money and finding a wrinkle to get in somewhere they otherwise would not have? Give me a break.
I know multiple guys that went somewhere like an IVY to play football and one person that got in to be in a band. You do what you can. That’s called life.

But donors write big checks to build classrooms for many to use. At least to me, there is difference between what the Pennington’s did at LSU to what the Loughlin’s did at USC.

Let’s also be honest here, every kid from Lori’s daughters’ HS knew they only got in due to her parents’. Most students at USC knew she only got in due to her parents’. It’s not like anyone was magically fooled here.

Go read about how she did it. Lori fricked up big time.
And USC receives federal dollars.

I think it's fricked up that we punish rich people for using their wealth. If it doesn't come with privileges then what's the point in being rich?

You realize this allows them some pull in other aspects too right?
Furthermore let’s be honest here, the Pennington’s didn’t need to help any family get into LSU it’s not exactly hard. USC is different.

This, if the Big money can buy their way in who cares. this actually helps keep everyone else's cost down. like luxury boxes in football.

This is their problem, they paid a firm to help facilitate 1 on 1 testing, then that firm supplied a bought off proctor who changed/edited the students ACT/SAT answers to increase their score.
Having two high schoolers, and having to pay for them to take the ACT multiple times to see if they get a better score and seeing the time they spend studying, this part pisses me off more then anything else in this case.

Yeah, not really caring about this shite. They proved in earlier cases that they didn’t take the place of other kids, so harm was not a factor. So, no harm , no foul. Just don’t see ruining people’s lives to help their kids get into College, tho most of us do it with harder work and discipline, training our own kids to earn that merit. I’m just not that in to it, there’s a lot of bad shite, people killing each other out there for me to even give this a second thought...meh.
