I just saw a man wearing a "Cold War veteran" hat. To my knowledge the Cold War never had any actual physical battles or anything like that. Perhaps the OT can enlighten me

Read a history book or two.

You've never heard of Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan?

I've heard of the Vietnam war, the Korean War, and the war in Afghanistan, yes. By definition a Cold War is everything short of open conflict

Lots of war and conflict during the Cold War, but yeah, that hat is kind of vague. The Cold War lasted from 1945-1991. Anybody who served during those years is a Cold War Veteran

Those are called proxy wars. Hallmarks of a cold war.

Ok that makes sense. Didn't even think about that tbh because the hat just confounded me

Are you being intentionally obtuse? It's a valid question considering the terms Korean War Veteran, Vietnam Veteran, and Afghan War Veteran exist for those conflicts.

The term "Cold War veteran" is in and of itself very vague

I've never heard a Vietnam vet refer to himself as a "Cold War Veteran"?
Maybe this guy was an "advisor" in Nicaragua in the 80's.

Allegedly this was once on the license plate of former VP Dan Quayle:
VIETNAM-ERA VETERAN
VIETNAM-ERA VETERAN

Not being obtuse. Cold wars are fought differently. Not sure why you couldn't be a veteran of the conflict.

True or false, Desert Storm Veterans are Cold War Veterans?

Sure they are. Those two aren't mutually exclusive.

if they served prior to 26 December 1991, they'd meet the Cold War window

Vietnam was the hot part of the Cold War

My interpretation as a person who grew up in the 70's and 80's: we dealt with the fear of atomic obliteration of the planet on a day to day basis in a time when information was much less accessible. I'm very thankful that I never had to serve in an actual military conflict. It was a pretty stressful time, though.
