My dad is a “Cold War Veteran” serving from 75-79. I bet he wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a hat like that.
I served from 96-00. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a “Yugoslav peacekeeping era veteran” hat
We both have too much respect for combat veterans to act like we served in a manner as heroically as they did.
I will say this though. Cold War submariners and spec ops guys will have some stories regarding how the CW was white hot

True. I believe almost all Gulf War vets were already in the Military before the outbreak of he war. For example when the Gulf War started I had been in the Army since 1988, almost all of that time serving in West Germany. Thus I was already a “Cold War Vet” (even though that is not something we even thought about). Then in late 1990 I shipped from Germany to Saudi Arabia for the Gulf War so this I’m a vet of that war as well.

Though my time in service was during that period, I don't think that is a term that I would identify myself with and certainly wouldn't wear a hat with that on it. That said, if the veteran that chooses to wear it makes him feel better, than go ahead. I'm not going to put him down for it.

As to your ignorance about battles being necessary for one to lay claim to being a veteran of said war I have friends that were safely 2 nations away from Vietnam but are authorized to wear the Vietnam ribbon.
Also, you should read up on the cold war concerning dangers and battles.
