re: Coastal Bridge awarded a change order

I knew it. I fricking knew it!
Instead of this being an emergency job where the lowest bidder was hourly rate being charged on a time and material job, the DOTD is treating this thing like a fricking road enhancement job. Bidding it out, change orders, etc.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is why this project is taking so long. It's not being treated as an emergency job that needs to be done ASAP. Hell, it took them a month just to award a bid and to start getting set up.

If they wrote the email like they wrote that article, I would not respond either

Sense there is no bamboozling the OT, yes I work at CB and no I am not Kelly or Dixie. WAFB sent us an email telling us they were doing an investigative report and asked if we would like to comment. We replied asking what is the story about and to please send us the list of questions in writing. Wafb replied, we don't give the questions out and you have until 5:00 to respond, so we didn't reply. You will see at the bottom of the article, it says something to the effect of, when asked, Coastal didn't comment, which is true but only because they didn't tell us what the hell they were doing.
This is an emergency, get it done project and Coastal is working 24/7 to get it done. To think this is a simple remove and replace project just shows your ignorance. This bridge was hit hard, moving the structure out of alignment, twisting and mangling main load bearing members to the point where it is highly critical and close to collapsing. It takes time to analyze the damage, come up with a repair method, fabricate both temporary and replacement members, jack, LIDAR scan, analyze, jack again, heat straighten, install replacement parts and remove temporary members. There are many more people working on this than just CB. The LaDOTD has hired the best bridge eningeers in the united states and if CB wasn't getting the job done, we would be replaced in a heart beat.
Currently, CB has completed every task ahead of schedule and as more parts and pieces come in, we are on it.

^^This is why it's taking so long. This is the company who is working on fixing the problem. If they were a mechanic, they would turn a simple oil change into a complete engine overhaul.

I hope this turns into a Chef Rob/Matt Morris Family Member/ homeless beggers on Siegan type thread.

Want a job? If we only had you working on this bridge it would be open by now.

Tell me this, Supermoto. How do you think they're going to fix the damage? Given that the estimated completion date is late January (which is a number with a lot of fudge factor thrown in it). Realize that it would be December if they actually put 12 hour crews working around the clock on it (which is what it should fricking be in the first place).
ETA: we're talking using cranes to position the steel pieces in place, rig baskets for the iron workers to attach and weld, nothing overly complex. I mean I guess if you've never been a part of or seen how it's done, it would seem like an overly complex thing to you.

quote:I'm not qualified to answer that question because I'm not a structural engineer. I have enough common sense to know that it is severely damaged and that it takes time to evaluate & determine if the damage didn't cause other stress areas of the bridge to weaken (which may or may not have to also be replaced). That bridge was hit hard and honestly, we are lucky its still standing.
How do you think they're going to fix the damage?

If it was as serious as you think it is, there would not be an estimate of completion in January. Think about it. That’s not an indicator of them working around the clock and busting arse. It gives them time to drag their arse and work 4 10’s while all us thousands of poor bastards have to drive way out of the way and lose hours of our lives so that the owner of Coastal can save on payroll and buy vacation homes and toys.

You and I can "think" and guess with regards to the damage and the scope of work required to repair. Thankfully, CB or any of the other companies working on the project, are required to be much more definitive on structural integrity with 100% accuracy.

I understand the inconvenience and it sucks. Instead of being angry with the entity trying to repair it, be pissed at the barge company and pilot that were negligent and caused the damage. They are the ones with the terrible record - AND probably to this very day, are continuing to operate poorly maintained vessels on our waterways.
Marquette Transportation vessels had smashed into, collided with or brushed up against bridges at least 32 times across the United States since Jan. 1, 2013.

I hope the bridge does not run into any delays. Once the river water level rises in March/April it will be a little more difficult I would imagine.
