Looking into doing the coast guard reserves next summer into what is called the “depot” program. I currently have a full time/career job but would like to serve in some capacity. Basic is 3 weeks for this. Has anyone done this before or have any solid info on it? Meeting with the recruiter next week.

Is that like a fancy name for you are in the reserves?

I am sure they would make you do their basic training and MOS school.

Boston Legal had an episode where Denny and Alan joined the USCG Reserves. Or maybe USCG Auxiliary. Whatever, they worked it into the show. That's all I've got.

Three week basic training? Whoa, sounds rugged. At least you could schedule it around LSU's bye week and not miss any of the season.

My BIL was in the Coast Guard Reserves. He retired a couple of years ago. He used to go one weekend a month down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and They would go out on the patrol boat.

Hope you realize you could get called up to active duty. He was called up right after 9/11 and was assigned to the port of New Orleans. He served active duty for I think 6 months of so. He had to take a leave of absence from his regular job, but he is a U.S. Treasury Agent, so I don't think it was a problem.

But I think he liked it. He liked going out on the boat. Search and rescue stuff.

My BIL was also Coast Guard reserve he patrolled Lake Pontchartrain on weekends.

Was single and really enjoyed his duty time.

But seriously, the Coast Guard is a great, under appreciated organization.

For instance, if you have a high school diploma and enter as a reserve enlisted recruit, basic training is held at Cape May, N.J. This intense eight-week program is designed to acclimate you to a military environment of rules, regulations and accountability.

In other instances, if you have prior service or professional experience, you might attend our Direct Entry Petty Officer Training Course (DEPOT). This three-week course is also at Cape May, N.J.

Sounds pretty sweet at first glance. What kind of background do you have that qualifies for this? My other thoughts are

1 its probably pretty intense to Try to cram all that into 3 weeks. I wonder what they're leaving out.

2 when is your MOS training or whatever they call it in the CG?

3 I wonder if there's lack of respect by peers and subordinates for those who do it the "easy" way. Especially since you're going in as an NCO.

I looked it up,what is your skill that they need? Navy had similar program for Seabees beginning of VietNam war,IPO(Instant Petty Officer).Depending on years of relevant experience determined rank one entered with. There was accelerated boot camp basically to familiarize them with the Navy. Was pretty good deal for those that qualified.
But(there’s always a but) they tended to catch some resentment from those that worked their way up from the bottom.Stay humble and be a team player and you’ll be fine.

That's how the Seabees got started during WW2. They took a bunch of construction baws and heavy equipment operators and made them instant sailors.

Why would you join the Coast Guard when you and join the Cajun Navy?

True. I am actually a head football coach for high school. I would go do the three week course in the summer. I have 2 kids.
I would like to serve but also looking at the aspect of having military health insurance for me and my family. My health insurance is so expensive. If I can serve and help provide I would love it.
I have a bachelors degree as well

As in anything having to do with the military read the dotted line.

Recruiters will feed you any line of BS to get you in the service. They are like salesman for Fast Freddy’s Used Cars.

Line they fed me in 80’s.
- hot chicks
Nope mostly fat chicks riding around in Ford Escorts. When they would get out the Escort would lift up.

- Hot chicks in Germany
Nope nada most were married to brass

- Hit chicks Guatemala or Honduras
You know this answer right off the bat

- Best one you get to see the world.
Just did not tell me about building roads in a mud pit where it rained everyday in Belize or sitting in mountains waiting for Rebels.

- Basic only 8 weeks they also did not add graduation week and reception station time.

- You get all this free stuff. Your first check goes toward uniforms, haircut, running shoes, etc. Army will always get it back.

- PS again around the base if a girl invites you to a hotel she has buddies ready at the hotel to beat your butt in and take your money. The DI’s tell you this and it is true. We had to fight these pricks as they beat up on my battle buddy and I loved to fight back then.

If you are a West Point graduate, maybe there’s another State you can mislead.

Just remember to always stay humble-
