Owlie chose to.

He says they made him feel pretty.

And it's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew,
Where danger is double and pleasures are few,
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines
And it's dark as a dungeon way down in the mines.

They didn’t have enough money to go out west. Most weren’t even paid money, they were paid in tokens where they had to shop in company stores for provisions. Pretty much slaves to the companies.

When the black lung got so bad you could no longer work, you died a slow agonizing death without pay.

My great grandfather was a miner. He got killed inside of Red Mountain. Grateful my life is a hell of a lot easier than that.

This is why unions were established. The working conditions today are a direct result of their involvement. But many on here think that businesses just gave better working conditions and better pay out of the goodness of their hearts.

For a lot of areas, especially here in Kentucky if you were a man you were working in the mine or you moved out of the holler. The coal companies owned the store in town and you were given coal script instead of money as pay for that reason (i.e. “Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store”). There was no viable infrastructure (and still isn’t) for other employment opportunities locally. There’s a reason they’re doing things like teaching them coding and bee-keeping instead of building a factory in places like Hazard.

Some of y’all never been to a Kentucky holler and it shows.

Absolutely. I think many folk now think unions have outlived their usefulness and are now a detriment.

Unions once served a great purpose. Now they mostly keep shitty employees employed.

IMO is depends on the profession and the leadership. I wouldn’t work in education without a union between the sue happy parents, poor local legislation, and administration that will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.

Hunger is a powerful motivator. Not only that, the hunger of your kids and wife without your job is the biggest factor.
